...for OTH’s [Orascom Telecom Holding] ongoing expansion into emerging markets, and our preparation for the challenges of providing top quality services nationwide is solid. We are confident that Banglalink™ will repeat the success story of Mobilink in Pakistan.”1 –Mr. Naguib Sawiris, Chairman and CEO Banglalink™ is the latest addition to the GSM family of OTH. Naguib Sawiris, Chairman and CEO of OTH, announced the acquisition of Sheba Telecom (Pvt.) Limited with a cost of US$60m in September of 2004. As Sheba Telecom, the worst performing network operator in the industry, the company had only 30,000 subscribers. To dispel this image, OTH had re-branded Sheba as Banglalink™ in an attempt to give it a completely new image. With that kind of a reputation at its disposition, the Banglalink™ management has placed one of the highest priorities on improving its network. In this respect, they have installed state-of-the-art equipment from Siemens and Huawei and brought in over 1,000 people, including experts, from 15 countries around the world to set up the required infrastructure. The system took a record of four months (less than half the normal time) to build. In 2005 alone, Orascom plans to invest $120 million, earmarking close to another $300 million for future investments. While Banglalink™ started out quite small, it has increased its coverage from 9 to 23 districts in just over three months. The company plans to provide mobile communication coverage to all the 61 districts......

The picture of Bangladesh helps to realize the matter more clearly that we have six operators even in this small country. And out of 14 corer population, almost 2 corers are using this service. Millions of dollars have already been invested in this sector and also are being invested. Technology was not only transforming the character of the telecommunications industry from within, but more significantly, much more significantly in my view, is changing the role played by telecommunications in economic and social life. ...license in 1996 to extend its business to cellular mobile, radio telephone services. It launched operation in the last quarter of 1997 as a Bangladesh-Malaysia joint venture. In July, 2004, it was reported that Egypt based Orascom Telecom is set to purchase the Malaysian stakes in Sheba Telecom through a hush-hush deal, as Sheba had failed to tap the business potentials in Bangladesh mainly due to a chronic feud between its Malaysian and Bangladeshi partners. An agreement was reached with Orascom worth US$25 million was finalized in secret. The pact has been kept secret for legal reasons, considering financial fallout and because of the feud. The main reason for the undercover dealing was the joint venture agreement between the Bangladeshi and the Malaysian partners, which dictates that if any party sells its Sheba shares, the other party will enjoy the first right to buy that. Integrated Services Ltd. (ISL), the Bangladeshi partner, was being ‘officially’ shown as purchasing the shares held by Technology Resources Industries (TRI) of Malaysia for $15 million. ISL then paid another $10 million to Standard Chartered Bank to settle Sheba's liabilities. In September, 2004, Orascom Telecom Holdings purchased 100% of the shares of Sheba Telecom (Pvt.) Limited (“Sheba”). It was acquired for US$60 million. Sheba had a base of 59,000 users, of whom 49,000 were regular when it was sold.[7] Afterward it was re-branded and launched its services under the “Banglalink” brand on February......
