SUPERFRUITS TO THE RESCUE! The Organic Way of Preventing Cancer
By Planetlovestars
Nowadays, as we obviously notice, illnesses are inevitable... cancer, especially... This life-threatening condition is one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality not only in our country but around the world. And this where the saying, “PREVENTION is better than cure”, should arrive. They say, while you’re still young, “you should start your habits right”. And it is true as well when we’re talking about health. Our body, while still young, “fresh”, and healthy, can deal with the stresses and toxins that we’re exposed to. It can still compensate... eliminate wastes, free radicals, and the like... but not until we’re old...That’s why adding organic foods, chiefly natural healthy fruits which we call the “Superfruits”, to your diet helps you get rid of that horrible health condition. And thus, your Nurse’s Notes buddy is here to help you to savor the delicious anticancer benefits of Superfruits!
Superfruit#1: GRAPES
Enjoy the sweetness of each and every grape you eat for they have found to have strong anticancer properties due to the anti-inflammatory effect of resveratrol present in them. They are particularly effective in colorectal cancer and breast cancer. Anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, present in grapes, have anti-proliferative properties and can inhibit the growth of cancer causing agents.
Freshen up with a grape juice! It not just prevents the risk of cancer but also suppresses the growth and propagation of cancer cells. The pigments contained in grapes enhance the overall immunity of the body which fights against cancer cells and their causative agents.Through a latest study, it has been discovered that purple colored Concord grape juice helps in preventing breast cancer. ...found to be very useful. The mushroom cracks open to have the wind take the spores away. However, some puffballs don’t crack open to have the wind take away the spores, some puffballs have a opening on them which is where the spores are released. The spores are about “3.5 to 5.5 microns in diameter”. (1) These spores are what make the giant puffballs like a big sack of powder, because the spores are extremely dry. The giant puffball mushroom is one of many mushrooms that can be consumed by humans and other creatures and prove to be beneficial to your health. Some mushrooms on the other hand can prove to be detrimental to your health if consumed. One interesting thing about the giant puffball is the fact that it has been known to have anticancer attributes, however it was never confirmed until a group of scientists confirmed it last year in 2012. (3) When the puffball first starts to grow it appears to be white colored, however, when it starts to grow older, the color of the giant puffball turns to be more yellow or brown. When the puffball turns brown or yellow, this is when it isn’t edible. (2) If the puffball isn’t brown or yellow, then it is known to be one of the better tasting mushrooms. The calvatia gigantean are decomposers. The giant puffballs break down dead wood or other material and ingest it into their constituents and they then use these materials for growth. (4). Giant puffballs decompose their food in order to regrow. The puffball can prove to be......

Testicular Cancer

...majorities of testicular cancer patients are cured by their initial treatment, and many of those who have a recurrence can be cured too. Surgery treatment for testicular cancer usually involves orchiectomy, the surgical removal of the affected testicle. This is done, in part, because the testes do not readily take in anticancer drugs. Because of the risk of spreading the cancer through contact with the loose skin of the scrotum, the surgery is usually done through an opening made in the groin where the thigh meets the torso. Since only two percent of men with testicular cancer will experience a new tumor in the other testicle, the remaining testicle is usually left intact. (Kowalsaki, 2013) Radiation therapy is also used to treat testicular cancer. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy is a local therapy that affects cancer cells only in the treated areas. Seminomas are highly sensitive to radiation. No seminomas are somewhat less sensitive to radiation. (Buecker, 2012) Chemotherapy has greatly enhanced the survival rate of non-seminomatous testicular tumors. Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells through the body. Chemotherapy is given to destroy cancerous cells that may remain in the body after surgery. Prognosis/Survival According to the American Cancer society, testicular cancer is one of the curable forms of cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, the 5-year......

Phytochemical Studies and in Vitro Cytotoxicity Screening of Piper Betle Leaf (Pbl) Extract

...Indian folk medicine for centuries and recently been proposed to be used as a chemopreventive agent because of its anti-oxidant activity. In the present paper, Piper betle leaves were standardized for stomatal index, vein islet and vein termination numbers, palisade ratio, UV fluorescence and different ash values. The Piper betle leaves are earlier reported to possess anticancer potential. Hence, the aqueous extract of the leaves was subjected to cytotoxicity studies on Hep-2 cell line using MTT and SRB assays. The mean CTC50 was found to be 96.25 µg/mL, which proved the potent cytotoxicity and hence, the probable anticancer property of the selected extract. Key words: Betel Leaf Anticancer Phytochemical characterization and its leaves, with a strong pungent and aromatic flavour, are widely consumed as a mouth freshener [4]. The leaves are credited with wound healing, digestive and pancreatic lipase stimulant activities in the traditional medicine [5]. During our exploration of non-toxic and affordable herbal medicinal formulations, the PBL extract and its constituent phenolics were found to show impressive anticancer activities [6-8]. The deep green heart shaped leaves of betel vine are popularly known as Paan in India [9, 10]. MATERIALS AND METHODS Collection of Piper betle Leaves (PBL): The PBL leaves were purchased from the local market of Varanasi, cleaned and dried under shade (at ambient temperature) and then in oven at 20-40 °C. The dried leaves were weighed (2.5 kg)......

The Time I Was Drunk

...1. What is the chemical problem? Why is the problem important? The chemical problem explored in this research is based upon anticancer agents and enzyme inhibitors. The scientists looked for caging groups other than the known Ru(bpy)2 that would bond biologically active molecules to either organic or metal-based protecting groups cleaved with light. These species would be used in medical situations to treat neurotransmitter defects, cancers, and enzyme dysfunctions. 2. What information is needed to solve the problem? One piece of extremely important information is that in the past, the potential caging groups tested have been similar to bpy in their structure; they have been planar, chelating ligands. The most widely used inorganic protecting group is (Ru)bpy2. This group can cage neurotransmitters and is used in a multitude of medical applications. 3. What was the experimental method? Were there any particular criteria that were considered in designing this experiment? How was the experimental method validated? Two complexes, [Ru(TPA)(RCN)2](PF6)2 and [Ru(TPA)(RCN)2](PF6)2 were prepared. After preparation, the compounds were put through a multitude of tests. These included UV-vis, NMR, IR spectroscopy, in addition to electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The first complex was also tested with X-ray crystallography. They were tested for release of nitrile ligands by being decomposed in DMSO and phosphate-buffered saline. The complexes were also tested for......

In Vitro Cytotoxic Effects of Muntingia Calabura Linn. Fruits Against Human Cancer Cell Lines.

...the recent years alternative therapies have gained importance over conventional cancer therapies for the treatment of cancer [2]. Chemotherapy is restricted by both intrinsic and acquired cell resistance to drugs. [3] This has necessitated the use of natural products for the treatment of cancer. There are compelling evidences for experimental investigations on the efficacy of plant drugs against cancer [4]. It is known that there are links between the inflammatory and nociceptive, oxidative and cancer processes. The ability to inhibit any of the process will definitely lead to the inhibition of the others [5]. Based on the fact that M. calabura fruit possess antioxidant activity, the aim of the present study was to determine the in vitro anticancer activity of methanol extracts of the fruits of M. calabura against HeLa and HEp-2 cancer cell lines using MTT assay.  Plant Material and Extraction  Collection and authentication of fruits of M. calabura Linn were collected from the surrounding areas of Erode, Tamil Nadu state, India during 2008-2009 and the plant was identified and authenticated and deposited (voucher number: BSI/SC/5/23/09-10/Tech-132) at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.  The fruits were collected freshly and extracted with methanol, the extract was completely dried in vacuum evaporator, stored in refrigerator at 4[degrees]C and protect from sunlight until use.  Cell line and Culture  The cell lines were obtained from......

Ascorbic Acid

...controversies viz., Danger of mega doses of ascorbic acid? Does ascorbic acid act as a antioxidant or pro-oxidant ? Does ascorbic acid cause cancer or may interfere with cancer therapy? However, the Panel on dietary antioxidants and related compounds stated that the in vivo data do not clearly show a relationship between excess ascorbic acid intake and kidney stone formation, pro-oxidant effects, excess iron absorption. A number of clinical and epidemiological studies on anti-carcinogenic effects of ascorbic acid in humans did not show any conclusive beneficial effects on various types of cancer except gastric cancer. Recently, a few derivatives of ascorbic acid were tested on cancer cells, among them ascorbic acid esters showed promising anticancer activity compared to ascorbic acid. Ascorbyl stearate was found to inhibit proliferation of human cancer cells by interfering with cell cycle progression, induced apoptosis by modulation of signal transduction pathways. However, more mechanistic and human in vivo studies are needed to understand and elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the anti-carcinogenic property of ascorbic acid. Thus, though ascorbic acid was discovered in 17th century, the exact role of this vitamin/nutraceutical in human biology and health is still a mystery in view of many beneficial claims and controversies....

Cuban Resolution to Lung Cancer

...finding better ways to treat it has become a priority for many researchers. American Cancer Society. Cancer Facts & Figures 2014. Depending on the type of lung cancer and how far it has spread, doctors have been using several ways to treat this disease. The cures that have been performed in the U.S. so far include surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these treatments. Nevertheless, after America has now decided to stabilize its relations with Cuba it can soon be introduced to a new type of lung cancer treatment called CimaVax. Cimavax Cimavax is a Cuban therapeutic anticancer vaccine developed to treat patients with tumors that grow faster due to a protein that encourages cell growth. In a healthy body epidermal growth factor (EGF) sends signals to cells that allow them to grow and divide by attaching to the receptors on the cell’s surface. However, in some cases, such as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), cells divide uncontrollably due to the excessive EGF production. Therefore, CimaVax works by stimulating the immune response to make antibodies that are specifically targeted for EGF and are able to bind and stop it from attaching to the receptors on cancer cells. This means there is no signal telling the cancer cells to grow and divide and thus the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells is slowed down.......

...used to have a family of scientists, as her father was a physician and her mother used to teach physics, furthermore, this is the reason she got interested in biology. In 1942, Jewel was a student at the University of Michigan, however it did not last because of segregation of African American students, she then transferred to a University in Alabama where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1944. Followed by her master’s degree, Jewel, received her Ph. D in cell physiology from the University of New York in 1950. After her education, she then joined the Harlem Hospital in New York to work for the cancer research foundation. With the help of another African American scientist, Jewel, tried to find a way to develop anticancer drugs on cells. Cobb was in charge of the laboratory, however, they did not succeed, yet, it was very useful in learning the affect of drugs on cancer cells with the help of a patient. Twelve years later, she became a single mother because of her divorce with Roy Cobb. In 1969, Jewel became the dean of Connecticut College, which made her give up research because of the time it demanded. In 1981, she became the first African-American president of the California state university and there she founded two new departments: communication and engineering and computer science. Bcom/275 Debate Paper Marijuana Legalization

...cannabis and its extracts provide an entourage of cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids that combine to create a synergy of benefits in holistic treatment of chronic and intractable pain” (Russo, MD, 2003, p2). In addition, medical marijuana is an effective analgesics for people receiving cancer chemotherapy treatment. Cancer has many classifications; the most painful one is bone cancer in which many physicians recommend or prescribe medical marijuana. Some of the more serious symptoms of cancer are nausea, vomiting, and extreme weakness, which are side effects of some anticancer drugs. Controlling or diminishing symptoms resulting from anticancer drugs is critical for suffering patients. Physicians prescribe medical marijuana based on the patient’s age, general medical condition, and other related factors. According to "Marijuana Use in Supportive Care for Cancer Patients" (2000), “Some anticancer drugs cause nausea and vomiting because they affect parts of the brain that control vomiting and/or irritate the stomach lining” (Nausea and Vomiting). Pain and suffering are always present in the seriously advanced cancer patients; therefore, these are the cases marijuana plays an important role as a medicine. Patients require the legalization of medical marijuana to avoid him or her breaking the law while consuming the product in name of medicine. Patients with symptoms of chronic pain, nausea, and vomiting because of the effects of chemotherapy will endeavor to......
