Ethics: China's Tainted Milk Question 2

...Question 2: What the future reputational damage affect and how could it be measured? There is lots of news and rumors spread about Baidu.com have received some payment from tainted milk manufacturer to not advertising any news about them. There is argument that these rumors have no evidence. But, many knew that this company integrated paid advertisements into its search listing. So, users will question the reliability of information that Baidu.com display to them. Of course this will damage public’s trust. This is because the user somewhat feel like being cheated by them because of not revealing the true story of what happen and the true information. User want a truth and reliable information which Baidu.com failed to provide. Once the public’s trust is completely lost, it is hard to gain it back. It takes time to get back user trust but for sure user will not trust them 100% anymore. If user boycott and stop using Baidu.com as their main search engine, company will face bankruptcy. How the company is view could be measured by how many people use and visit the site. The number of viewer or user may be lower after that rumors came out. This indicator can be a tool to measure the damage of public trust. Other that tunes out public’s trust, these rumors also may vanish investor’s interest to invest in this company. These sorts of rumors give a bad image of Baidu.com. When company image was drowning out, investors of course will have no interest in the company anymore and...

Melamine Milk Powder

...Melamine milk powder Every year before I go back to China, many relatives and friends ask me to bring some milk powders and infant foods. Why? Because people in China think the food safety is untrustworthy, a big amount of people were sickened and killed by food. Unlike the food safety issue in U.S, which is caused by biological reasons mostly, most of incidents of safety in China are man-made. The Food Safety Law has been enacted for two years, but the food safety issues emerge endlessly. It often said that food is the first necessity of the people; food is the most basic condition for survival. If the food is not safe then the life does not have safeguard. A major food safety incident in China was made public in September 2008. Kidney and urinary tract effects, including kidney stones, affected about 300,000 Chinese infants and young children, with six reported deaths. Melamine had been deliberately added at milk-collecting stations to diluted raw milk ostensibly to boost its protein content (Tritscher 1). Milk powder produced by Sanlu Group was found to contain 2563 mg of melamine per kg, while the allowable amount should be 15 mg(Yuan 22). It is not the first time that the scandal of milk powder came out. In April, 2004, more than 200 infants in Anhui Province were diagnosed to have a disease, which caused the infants' heads to grow much bigger than normal ones. It was found that the substandard milk powder produced by a factory in Fuyang City, east China's......

Case Study

...China’s Tainted Baby Milk Powder: Rumored Control of Online News On July 16, 2008, it was announced that several Chinese producers of baby milk powder had been adding melamine, a chemical usually used in countertops, to increase the “richness” of their milk powder and to increase the protein count. Shockingly, the melamine-tainted milk powder was responsible for the deaths of four infants and the sickening of more than 6,200 more.1 Milk manufacturers had been using melamine as a low-cost way of “enriching” their product in both taste and protein count. Melamine, a toxic chemical that makes countertops very durable, damages kidneys. 2 This fact came to world attention on March 16, 2007, when Menu Foods of Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, recalled dog and cat foods that it had mixed in Canadafrom Chinese ingredients that were found to include melamine.3 Very quickly thereafter, pet owners claims and class action lawsuits threatened to put the company into bankruptcy until settlements were worked out.4 A subsequent investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) led to the recall of pet food by major manufacturers, including Del Monte, Nestle Purina, Menu Foods, and many others.5 On February 6,2008, “the FDA announced that that two Chinese nationals and the businesses they operate, along with a U.S. company and its president and chief executive offi cer, were indicted by a federal grand jury for their roles in a scheme to import products purported to......

China's Birth Control Policy

...10 May 2014 China Open Up Birth Control Policy Recently years, China’s government has recognized some disadvantages that the One-child Policy resulted, so the government decided to implement a new policy. The one-child Birth Control Policy was established to limit communist China’s population growth. There are both some advantages and disadvantages between China’s old birth control policy and China’s new birth control policy. But generally, it is obvious that the new China birth control policy is adjusted more to modern society than the old China’s birth control policy. The old policy caused some social problems. It restricted economic development. And the new policy could solve some social problems which the One-child Birth Control Policy caused. The One-child Birth Control Policy caused some social problems like sex ratio imbalance and abortion. Both the new policy and the old policy have great effects on population. The One-child Birth Control Policy stipulates people that one parent can only have one child. After the Second World War, China had a population explosion which caused social problems such like food shortage and famine. To resolve this situation, China’s government decided to establish a policy to limit the population growth which is China’s birth control policy. China successfully controlled its population growth after they stipulate that policy. In 2013, the China’s government decided to implement a new birth control policy. This policy allowed......

China's New Normal

...KAIST, College of Business Chinese Financial Market (FIN681) Term paper China’s New Normal Economics & Declining Growth Rate 1. Backgrounds of Chinese New Normal Economy Policy At the opening of the annual National People’s Congress (NPC), Chinese premier Li Keqiang officially announced that the growth target for China in 2015 will be of “approximately 7 per cent”, considerably lower than in the past. The announcement came as no surprise as it had been anticipated in a speech by Mr Li in Davos in February stating that the country had “entered the stage of the new normal, shifting from high speed to medium-to-high speed”. The new growth target set by Beijing is now lower than last year’s 7.5 per cent, and more than 2 percentage points lower than in the past two decades. The government’s ambitions therefore align with the recent slowdown experienced by the Chinese economy since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008. After the first two years of Xi Jinping’s term, the Chinese economy grew by 7.4 per cent ‘only’ in 2014 – the lowest rate since 1990 – low enough to convince Chinese policy makers to shift to a new policy stance, as they realize previous growth targets are no longer sustainable. The shift to a lower but more sustainable growth target came soon after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned last year that a series of danger signs suggested that China would probably face a hard landing in the absence of crucial reforms. More......

Tainted Milk Powder

...Carolyn Denise Maddox Unit 1 Tainted Baby Milk Powder April 30, 2012 1) I do believe that there has been significant damage done to Baidu.com’s reputation. This company was involved in a very high profile case that involved human beings health which is more important than any financial gain or loss. As the case states, the stock share price has declined almost $200 which indicates that public opinion and trust in the company has fallen tremendously. Tens of thousands of children would not have been sickened if people were informed earlier about the tainted milk. 2) For the most part, companies measure their reputation by stock price. Continuous reputation damage can have a detrimental effect on the company’s stock price which in effect the bottom line of profit and dividends. I think a bad reputation has a domino effect on the entire organization. The overall effect can be measured by total dollar sales, profit, stock price increase or decrease, has the customer base declined, etc. including the demise of the business itself. 3) I think the first step for the company would be to admit to its wrong doing and try to fix it from there. Although there will be many upset by the admittance, I believe that more are upset because they have not admitted to wrong doing. It is a matter of trust and knowing that one will stand up for the mistakes that have been made. The biggest challenge is regaining trust from the stakeholders, investors and then the consumers. I think...

China's New Concept for Development

...CHINA’S NEW CONCEPT FOR DEVELOPMENT Jiyao Bi1 INTRODUCTION In the first 20 years of the 21st century China is entering a new development stage to comprehensively build a prosperous society and to accelerate its modernization drive. China views these two decades as a period of great strategic opportunity which should be pursued vigourously. From an international perspective, peace and development remain the central themes of our era, and China is working to achieve this peaceful environment for development. From a domestic perspective, 25 years of economic reform and opening up have laid a solid basis for development, and China has achieved favourable conditions to accelerate development. However, opportunities are always accompanied by challenges. A key challenge for China is to adopt new thinking and ideas for development and make a new breakthrough in reform, so as to tightly grasp and make a full use of this opportunity to further promote its modernization drive. I. CHINA’S DEVELOPMENT TRENDS AND ISSUES China has experienced rapid economic growth since the late 1970s when economic reform and opening policies was initiated. From 1978 to 2004, China’s GDP grew by a yearly average of 9.5 per cent, the highest levels of GDP growth in the world. China has successfully maintained its sustained and rapid economic growth in recent years by improving and strengthening macro-control policies.
