Lovelock’s Dream Run

Perceptions about people’s identities are becoming an increasingly important part of society and are being challenged. Whether we like it or not, people make assumptions on each other based on clothing, the way we walk, the way we talk, our skin colour, and anything that the subconscious picks up. People are aware of this and so try to show themselves in a more desirable light, which can be very deceptive. In David Geary’s play Lovelock’s Dream Run assumptions are made throughout and there is constant thought as to how others are viewing each other. In scene 10, pages 41-43, Geary is making us see that people try so hard to show themselves in a different light that they might be very different from first thought. People make assumptions based on appearances, yet these appearances can often be misleading, thus it is difficult to distinguish the appearance from the reality of what truly lies underneath it all.
Leni Riefenstahl was a famous German film director. She helped create many propaganda films for Hitler during his time in power. The films she created support Hitler’s regime and presented a biased view of Hitler’s “true Aryan” (Geary 27) race that he created (Hinton 80). During the scene, Leni is taking photographs of Jack Lovelock, the 1500m 1936 Berlin Olympic Champion, using him for his appearance (which is very Aryan) to help their cause. We know this because previously in the play Hitler was upset that Jack wasn’t a German but justified it by saying that “at least he looks the part” (Geary 22) meaning that Hitler believes that he can take advantage of Jack for his own benefit and the benefit of his cause. Identities are very personal. The lighting helps demonstrate this idea as it is very bright and is described as “blasting” Jack when he is being photographed. This lighting creates the idea that they are…...

...Clouds We can see clouds in the sky; it is like the white cotton in the sky. It is a visible mass droplet or ice particle in the air and is caused by condensation. Precipitation occurs from clouds but not all precipitation is from all clouds, there is no precipitation without clouds. Clouds can absorb solar energy which means it helps to lessen the heat. Without clouds days would have been much warmer and nights much colder. Majority of clouds are found in troposphere. Clouds are composed of other substances such as methane, ammonia, and sulfuric acid. The different types of clouds are cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and nimbus. Cumulus clouds are a type of low-level cloud that can have noticeable vertical development and clearly defined edges. Cumulo means "heap" in Latin. They are often described as "puffy" or "cotton-like" in appearance, and are generally less than 6,500 feet (2,000 m) in altitude. Stratus is a cloud belonging to a class characterized by horizontal layering with a uniform base, as opposed to convective clouds that are as tall or taller than wide. Stratus is used to describe flat, hazy, featureless clouds of low altitude varying in color from dark gray to nearly white. Stratus clouds may produce a light drizzle or snow. A "cloudy day" usually features a sky filled with stratus clouds obscuring the disk of the sun. These clouds are essentially above-ground fog formed either through the lifting of morning fog or when cold air moves at low altitudes over a......

Nine

...The musical Nine focuses on the life of an artist. As an artist, Guido Contini who directs films and has became famous for his work. Arrogant and self-centered Guido Contini finds himself struggling to find meaning, purpose, and most importantly a script for his latest film. With only a week left before shooting begins, Guido desperately searches for answers and inspiration from his wife, his mistress, and others around him. As his chaotic profession steadily destroys his personal life, Guido must find a balance between creating art and deciding what is really important to him. Guido’s obsession with his films but more importantly his obsession with his lifestyle blinds him from reality. Throughout the story the press keep hassling Guido and his wife, Luisa, about the way Guido lives his life. Including his personal life, which entails questions about his mistresses, his progress on his movie, and the relationship between him as his wife. In a scene Luis describes whom her husband really is, and that the press confuses Guido with his work. “My husband makes movies; To make them he lives a kind of dream; In which his actions aren’t always what they seem”, Luisa believes that her husband and his work are confused by the public. When watching the play I was somewhat confused on what side she was on. I couldn’t distinguish the difference between how she felt towards Guido and how she felt towards the press’s thoughts on Guido. I believe though at that point in the play......

In order for the user to effectively harness all of this computational power, operating systems (OSes) for these new hardware platforms are needed. Existing multicore operating systems do not scale to large numbers of cores, and do not support clouds. Consequently, current day cloud systems push much complexity onto the user, requiring the user to manage individual Virtual Machines (VMs) and deal with many system-level concerns. In this work we describe the mechanisms and implementation of a factored operating system named fos. fos is a single system image operating system across both multicore and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud systems. fos tackles OS scalability challenges by factoring the OS into its component system services. Each system service is further factored into a collection of......

...Cloud is actually expanding the role of information technology departments, Cisco-Intel survey finds. Aug 20, 2013 McKendrick, Joe http://www.forbes.com We’ve been hearing about it for several years now: that IT departments will shrink or disperse as cloud computing takes hold in enterprises. A new survey, however, suggests that IT departments are actually expanding, and IT leaders are taking on elevated roles within businesses as a result of cloud. The survey of 4,226 IT leaders across the globe, conducted by Cisco Consulting Services, in partnership with Intel, finds that while cloud adoption within enterprises is growing, now accounting for 23 percent of IT spending, and expected to rise to 27 percent over the next three years, there is no discernible reduction in on-premises IT taking place. In fact, a majority, 57%, see the size of IT increasing in terms of full-time IT headcount. Rather than viewing IT as marginalized, 76 percent of respondents see IT as taking on a new role as a “broker,” or intermediary, of cloud services, orchestrating the planning and procurement process for lines-of-business (LOBs) across internal and external clouds while managing third-party complexity. Much of the purchasing of IT services is shifting directly to business managers, but they still need and seek the guidance of their technology leaders to make sure their investments are going to the right places. This is another company that is taking IT to a new level. Cloud, along with......

...Cloud Computing September 2nd, 2013 Cloud Computing Presently, there are many organizations who reside in the market of telecommunications (telecom). Although there are a vast number of competitors in the market, Ericsson continues to be the world’s leader in providing telecom services of various types. The Ericsson organization offers infrastructure development, complete solutions and a variety of enterprise packages. To minimize costs and increase the profitability of the organization, Ericsson has opted to utilize cloud services from Rightscale and Amazon. Attributed to the many variables that are present when cloud computing, I desire to discuss the following items in greater detail during this paper: * Discuss how Ericsson benefited from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in terms of cost reduction, automated software updates, remote access, and on-demand availability. * Evaluate the scalability, dependability, manageability, and adaptability of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Services (Amazon S3), and RightScale. * Examine the security concerns for cloud-based services and make suggestions to cope with these concerns. * Assess the possible scalability, reliability, and cost issues associated with cloud computing, and make suggestions to overcome each of these issues. Benefits from Amazon Web Services in terms of cost reduction, automated software updates, remote access, and on-demand availability. ......

...MINI-CASE: NINE DRAGONS PAPER1 The Global Recession "This time is really different. Large and small are all affected. In the past, the big waves would only wash away the sand and leave the rocks. Now the waves are so big, even some rocks are being washed away." - Cheung Yan, co founder and Chairwoman of Nine Dragons Paper2 The first week of January, 2009, was proving to be a challenge for Nine Dragon’s Paper. The company had to repeatedly deny rumors that it was on the edge of bankruptcy. A variety of media reports over the past two weeks had reported that the company’s inability to service its debt would lead to a bankruptcy filing. Incorporated in Hong Kong in 1995, Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings) Limited, had become an international powerhouse in the paper industry. The company's primary product was linerboard, with a product line including kraftlinerboard, testlinerboard and white top linerboard in a portfolio of paperboard products used to manufacture consumer product packaging. The company had expanded rapidly and spent extensively. But by January 2009 the world economy was spiraling downward. Squeezed by market conditions and burdened by debt, Nine Dragons Paper (NDP), the largest paperboard manufacturer in Asia and second largest in the world, saw its share price drop to HK$ 2.33, 90% off its high and less than half of book value. As the economic crisis of 2008 bled into 2009, export-oriented industries suffered. Rumors had been buzzing since October that NDP was on...

The Cloud

...One hot summer morning a little Cloud rose out of the sea and floated lightly and happily across the blue sky. Far below lay the earth, dry, from drought. The little Cloud could see the poor people of the earth working and suffering in the hot fields, while the cloud floated on the morning breeze, without a care. "Oh, if I could only help the poor people down there!" she thought. "If I could but make their work easier! And as the day passed, and the Cloud became larger, this wish to do something for the people of earth was ever greater in her heart. On earth it grew hotter and hotter; the sun burned down so fiercely that the people were fainting in its rays; it seemed as if they must die of heat, and yet they were obliged to go on with their work, for they were very poor. Sometimes they stood and looked up at the Cloud, as if they were praying, and saying, "Ah, if you could help us!" "I will help you; I will!" said the Cloud. And she began to sink softly down toward the earth. The thought made her suddenly marvelously big and strong and powerful. Never had she dreamed that she could be so big. Like a mighty angel of blessing she stood above the earth, and lifted her head and spread her wings far over the fields and woods. She was so great, so majestic, that men and animals were awestruck at the sight; the trees and the grasses bowed before her; yet all the earth creatures felt that she meant them well. "Yes, I will help you," cried the Cloud once more. "Take me to......

Clouds

...Clouds Jessica Pixley Weather and Climate Robert Morris University Clouds are an astonishing part of nature and help give us an idea of the current state of the weather. Clouds can vary dramatically in shape, size, color and position. Early in the nineteenth century French naturalist Jean-Baptitse Lamarck had started the first system to classify clouds which was polished by a naturalist named Luke Howard shortly after. Not until 1887 was Howards system finalized by Ralph Abercromby and Hugo Hildebrandson into the system we use today. This system entails four major cloud groups and ten basic types of clouds based on their appearance and position in the sky. The four groups are high clouds, middle clouds, low clouds, and clouds with vertical development. The first cloud in the high cloud group is the Cirrus cloud. Cirrus clouds are formed by the freezing of water droplets. They can be found normally above twenty thousand feet. These clouds generally appear white or light grey in color. Strong western winds blow these clouds into thin wispy strands known as “mares’ tails”. In my opinion, these clouds look like they are painted into the sky. When cirrus clouds are present expect a nice pleasant day ahead. The cirrocumulus is next in the high cloud group. These clouds generally are seen less than the cirrus cloud. These clouds are formed by ice crystals as well. They are also found above twenty thousand feet. If you hold you hand out and up at the sky these clouds will......

...Cloud Clients for Security and Compliance Proper data and endpoint security is a necessity in the financial services data environment. Cloud client solutions at end-points formerly occupied by PCs can increase data security, governance, and compliance through a centrally stored data base and managed infrastructure. Cloud clients can be configured to support the latest identity management and access control policies and best practices though the use of two-factor authentication. Cloud clients can also be centrally configured to restrict user access to specific resources, and access rights can be changed without having to service or modify the desktop in any way. By using cloud clients, end points and individual access can be completely locked down as needed by the IT administrator through centralized control of the virtual machines hosted by the servers. All of the data in a cloud client/virtual server computing environment resides on the servers themselves...not at the cloud client end-points. Data is prevented from leaving the premises on USB memory sticks, CDs, or other portable media, for example, since no data resides on the cloud client desktop device. Storing all data in centralized data centers greatly improves security and can also help ensure compliance with data privacy regulations as required under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and other federal and state regulations. Since all data resides in the data center, automatic information back-up can be......

...Internal Cloud | | American Military UniversityISSC 340Professor Wang | | | George L Ragland | 11/19/2015 | | Introduction Cloud computing is a Web-Based processing, that allows user to share software , information, and resources provided to computers and other personal devices such as Smartphone's via the Internet. By utilizing the cloud, users have the capability to provide computing resources dynamically and corporate businesses can essentially change their Information Technology plan. As the technology grows, Cloud computing introduces new ways to conduct business but also bring in some new challenges, specifically when planning the privacy and security of the information stored within the cloud servers. This technology also uses expandable computer resources and offers them as to users using Internet as a medium. Allowing companies to share resources and among vast number of consumers cuts a large amount of costs in ownership of Information Technology. In today's business world many companies are shifting to Cloud Services which improves the scalability and also makes the companies have a larger reach of clients. Private clouds are a type of cloud computing that delivers some of the advantages of public cloud, including self-service and scalability, but through a user built architecture. A private cloud is dedicated to a single organization unlike public clouds, which deliver services to multiple organizations. Also, private cloud offers......

...1. Describe the 3 different Cloud Services available to corporations today? The cloud is in huge transformation in the business industry that increases the compute capacity and networking capacities. The computer industry is growing in an up-to-date fashion and therefore, cloud computation is the latest fashion that is changing rapidly and it is very difficult to understand cloud and its different offers or services in the corporation world. As Andrew McAfee has focused three important services, which cloud provides. These services are divided into three categories such as: 1. Infrastructure as a service: The IAAS is the most basic service and its users are technology companies and use it as a server in the cloud. These tech companies are expert in computing in this IAAS system. They are very expert in using this service, but not well prepared to install or maintain it. 2. Platform as a service: This is another basic service used in the cloud platform, which the companies use to develop the software for its existing customers with customization of its customers. In this service, various programming languages are used to develop a software such as; Java, .NET, Python etc. that help in writing the codes in a small time period and allow the customers to cover transaction. 3. Software as a service: It is most the important service, which is used solely by the cloud itself without using any hardware or software in the data center. It has become successful in salesforce.com...

Cloud Nine, Caryl Churchill Analysis

...Cloud Nine by Caryl Churchill.. Discuss the dramatic qualities of this writing. The extract from the opening of Cloud Nine is incredibly dense in the number of ideas expressed by the playwright in the short space of time. Churchill uses both verbal and visual signs, simultaneously but often incongruently, in order to place emphasis on her subversion of racial and gender stereotypes. The opening tableau presented on stage with the union jack set upon a flagpole at once introduces the stereotypically British Victorian family who begin by singing a patriotic song honouring England, penned by Churchill herself. The effect of a song sung in unison by all the characters firmly established this introductory scene in non-naturalistic territory, instead bordering on farce. The words of the song, presumably sung to the audience, correspond with the actions: the family do gather as they sing “Come gather...” repeatedly and they do indeed “Rally to the flag” on stage. According to the particular perspectives of audience members, this opening song may be taken as natural harmless pride or jingoistic stirring. Whatever position is taken, by the second song, it is either entirely invalidated or affirmed. The songs form a framing device for the passage introducing all the members of the family. The first seems to evoke a lulling sense of camaraderie asking the audience to “come gather” but then as a result of what is presented in between, by the time the second song begins twenty......

...Fine Arts & the Creative Process: Theatre Emphasis April 26, 2012 Cloud 9 Critical Response The play Cloud Nine examines questions of gender identity, sexuality and individual freedom, as they exist within two traditional, oppressive ideological models: colonial imperialism and masculine supremacy. By contrasting these worlds of political and sexual dominance, the play draws a parallel between the paralysis exacted by both frameworks upon the development and expression of unique, authentic personhood. The play dramatizes the argument in startling fashion by challenging the touchstones of theatrical convention. Specifically, it defies usual methods of depiction, for some of the main characters in Cloud 9 are portrayed by actors who do not, in any physical or obvious way, resemble those characters. Because the play distorts and uproots the standards of dramatic characterization in such a bold way, the staging of Cloud 9 can potentially border on the ludicrous. So thrown is the audience, that members might start to disengage from the activity of the play and dismiss its theatrical experimentation as too obvious to be regarded seriously, too overdone to be clever or provocative. However, if such an impression of Cloud 9 is registered, I believe this is a failing not of the play but of an audience conditioned to assign fixed attributes to characters in order to render them intelligible. Cloud 9 is not interested in offering satisfaction in this rather simple manner, or of......
