The "Cash for Clunkers" program has been a success. ...Expectations of English Composition As I stumble through the door of my first English Composition class in college, I am baffled by my professor’s seemingly enormous expectations for my meager writing skills. My anxious mind anticipates the same question as I stare blankly at the white dry erase board; “Will my past knowledge of high school composition correlate with the academic rigors of college English Composition”. The curriculum of college English is far more demanding and time consuming than the simplicities of high school English. I am presented with great expectations to thrive in the pressures of writings essays and reading other authors’ pieces. My presumptions will lead to positive academic achievements in English composition as I absorb the significant impression of college writing skills. My past high school teachers valued student composition as simplistic and predictable. Writing about weekend ventures and family endeavors became very arduous and tedious as the topic always presented the identical situation, ‘Write an essay about your experiences of a fun family experience or weekend event.’ Therefore, my essays were based upon the same idea as other student’s writings, never exploring into the uncharted, creative world of thought provoking essays. Writing in high school became very dull because teachers expected each student composition to be based on the same topic. Teachers identified each student’s essay as monotonous and repetitive since it was based......

...GUYS VS. MEN DAVE BARRY Dave Barry (b. 1947) is a syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald, where he won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1988. He is the author of twenty-three humor books, including Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys (1995), the introduction of which is included here. Despite its title, "Guys vs. Men" is not a comparative study of these two basic types of males. Men and manhood have been written about far too much already, says Barry. But guys and guyhood are neglected topics, and even though he "can't define exactly what it means to be a guy," Barry's essay lays out "certain guy characteristics" that distinguish his quarry from other warm-blooded animals in the field. ______________________________________________________________________________ This is a book about guys. It's not a book about men. There are already way too many books about men, and most of them are way too serious. Men itself is a serious word, not to mention manhood and manly. Such words make being male sound like a very important activity, as opposed to what it primarily consists of, namely, possessing a set of minor and frequently unreliable organs. But men tend to attach great significance to Manhood. This results in certain characteristically masculine, by which I mean stupid, behavioral patterns that can produce unfortunate results such as violent crime, war, spitting, and ice hockey. These things have given males a bad name. And the "Men's Movement," which......

This is the finishing touch to the paper like the sesame seeds on the top of the bun. Education has played a key role in my understanding of the English Language and writing research papers. I attended Dominican High School which is a college preparatory school for my high school career. All four years consisted of at least one English class. From day one of freshman year the faculty explained how important it was to understand the correct format to writing a paper, grammar and speaking in public. At least once a month I was required to write a paper, either research or an essay. My format was excellent on my first research paper and because of this my teacher asked if I had received help of any kind. I explained that the only help I received was from my mother, and all she did was proofread, check for spelling and grammatical errors. Over the next three years I received many compliments on the structure of my papers from different English teachers. In the year 2006 I joined the Marine Corps. Rank advancement requires many things, one of them being the completion of MCI’s. These are educational courses you complete independently. You must have seven completed to advance. Out of the hundreds of MCI’s a few of them have to deal with English and grammar. To complete an MCI you must take a multiple choice......

Expository Composition Essay

...JaKia Russell Expository Essay 2 The new generation has a different aspect on self-respect now. People no longer have the save respect for themselves as they did centuries ago. It is something that you can see everywhere you go and in everything you do, you will always see self-respect or lack of self-respect somewhere. Have you ever noticed that the self-respect has changed dramatically in younger and older people today? People do not realize the real meaning of self-respect today and that is a sad situation. If you don’t have respect for yourself who is going to respect you? What exactly is self-respect? Self-respect is when you value yourself whether it’s your mind; way of thinking, or the way you carry yourself. Self-respect would be having proper esteem or dignity of your character. By that I mean your character is defined by your own moral values how you came up in life has a lot to do with this. When you look at what is going on in the world today, you can see all kinds of people with the lack of self-respect for themselves. On the Internet, on the streets, no matter where it is that you may go. For example: on the internet you will find teenage or some women who claim to love themselves so much but they degrade themselves over the internet by putting unnecessary pictures of themselves on websites for attention. This is not self-respect at all. Self-respect is based on what you do and can be an ongoing effort. It is not about what you did in the past it is......

Composition and Inverse

...Composition and Inverse Alicia Frambro MAT 222: Intermediate Algebra Prof: Michael Smith September 22, 2013 Composition and Inverse When using functions, there are different ways to solve various values. Many companies use these functions to monitor business pertaining gross profit and many other operations such as adjusting productivity. Visual examples of these functions are graphs. They provide a visual relationship between composition and inverse solutions as well and the difference between profit gain and profit loss for a business. The following functions will be used to solve certain problems. fx=2x+5 g(x)=x2-3 (x) = 7+x3 f-h(4) Use rule of composition and solve which is f(4)-h(4). f(x)-h(x)= 2x+5-(7-x) 2(4) +5- 7-43 Substitute 4 for x. 8+ 5- 33 Use order of operations to solve. 8+5-1= 12 Therefore (f-h)(4)= 12 Evaluate two compositions of the above functions. A. (fog)(x) B. (fog)(x) The method that should be used to solve is to find the solution of one function and then substitute the solution for x in the other solution. For A we would first solve for g(x) and substitute the solution for x into f(x). A. (fog)(x)= f(g(x)) (fog)(x)= f(x2-3) (fog)(x)= 2(x2-3) +5 Substitute g(x) for x in f(x). (fog)(x) = 2x2-6+5 Simplify by using the distributive property and order of operations. (fog)(x)= 2x2 -1 Answer. B. (h0g)(x) = h(g(x)) Use the same concept of A but (hg)(x)= h(g(x)) (hog)(x) = h(x2 –......

Composition of Sugars

...Lab: 3—Chemical Composition of Cells: Sugars Purpose of this lab: To learn about sugars and the test used to identify them. Introduction The organic macromolecules known as sugars are a type of carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are composed of monosaccharides, which are single, sugar unit monomers. Two sugar units linked together are known as a disaccharide. In this lab, we conducted tests on various substances with Bendict’s solution to determine which sample contained sugars. Benedict’s solution is a turquoise blue color and reacts with sugars after being heated in a boiling water bath, resulting in a color change. The color change varies with the concentration of sugar present, with strong positives indicating a high sugar concentration and weaker positives correlating with lesser concentrations of sugar. The color changes are as follows: orange-red (very high), orange (high), yellow-orange (moderate), yellow (low), green (very low), no change in color (no sugar present). Materials and Methods: --6 test tubes marked at 1cm and 3cm from the bottom --Benedict’s reagent --substances to be tested: water (control), glucose solution, onion juice, potato juice, starch suspension, and an unknown substance --hot plate with a beaker filled with water for a boiling water bath Each substance to be tested was filled in a separate test tube to the 1cm mark, with the exception of onion and potato juice, to which 5 drops of each were added to......

...Walker Everest University Online Professor Pincumbe Composition 5002 August 24, 2014 Final Preventing a cold can be as easy as listening to your body, while curing hiccups and insomnia might require using some unusual techniques. In this essay you will find helpful hints to help you rid a cold or hiccups and how to get some sleep at night. My experiences are based on old wives tales and tricks I have used on myself and I have proof that some of these tricks might work for others. Because I have not suffered a cold in many years, I thought I must be doing something right so I would like to share with you my regiment. Also, I will share what I have learned about how to cure hiccups and what my son and I have done to cure our hiccups. These tips are based mostly on old wives tale and tips from the “Help From Heloise” books by Eloise Bowles. Now my tips for curing insomnia are based on my experiences with the insomniac women in my family, who struggle to sleep at night or find themselves awoken from sleep in the wee hours of the morning. However, I do not have this problem of insomnia. So I became curious of the fact that these ladies were not sleeping at night only because I could not understand what they were going through. Sleep to me is like milk, “it does the body good” and I ensure I get the right amount of sleep. My tips to my family were based on my own sleeping rituals or from what I have read on WebMD. This essay is based on tips I have collected over......

Ritual Essay-English Composition

...Argument on funeral ritual We, as humans, share a deep need for ritual and connection, especially when there is a great change in our lives such as getting married, birth of a child, school graduation, death of love ones and many others. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, a ritual is defined as “a religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order”. Performing a funeral ceremony is a traditional and symbolic ritual of expressing our beliefs, thoughts and feelings about the death of love ones but the crucial purposes of this ritual has been overlooked to a great a extent in our society. Many people think funeral is waste of money but when carefully planned and does not put survivors into debt, the benefits outweigh the detriments. A funeral is intended to form unique reflection of one's life, which serves to confirm emotionally the reality of the loss, and bring closure to survivors. Funeral ritual do not just acknowledges an end of life but a life span as whole (both life that was lived and end of life). They offer the living (mourners) a possibility to assemble and remember the things that are relevant to them about the life of the person who died such as his or her accomplishments, friendship, guidance or love. Assembling for funeral ceremony is place for us to think about the moments we shared with the deceased and to share those memories with others. This is helpful to mourners the more we share......

...Lisa Neumann Student ID # AC0700552 English Composition II EN130 Assignment #3 Process Analysis Essay 12/18/14 Page 1 How to prepare my favorite dish: Roast Pork Authentic Puerto Rican Style My all time absolutely favorite dish is Pernil ( pronounced perr-neel), translated from Spanish is Roast Pork Shoulder. Though it is a time consuming item to make, the recipe is fairly simple and the finished product, a succulent tasty Pork Shoulder, is very much worth the wait. Below I will advise of the preparation techniques and ingredients needed to make this mouth watering dish. This recipe will serve approximately 8 people. The approximate active preparation time is 20 minutes and the approximate inactive preparation time is about 5 hours 30 minutes, plus marinating time. I've also included the nutritional value per serving in this paragraph as well. (Serving size: 1 {229g}, servings per recipe 8, calories 896, calories from fat 612, cholesterol 268 mg, sodium 633 mg, carbohydrates 1g, dietary fiber 0.1g, sugars 0g, protein 65g). A time saving tip I use and like, is to gather ALL my ingredients first, and placed them in a nearby handy location, so they are all there and ready to use. Note that all the ingredients I use are from GOYA, with the exception of the salt and pernil, which is best gotten from your local butcher. If you don't have local butcher, a supermarket bought pork shoulder will do. The ingredients are listed below: * 1 skin on, bone in......

Composition and Inverse

...Composition and Inverse MAT 222 Instructor Amy Glidewell 19 January 2015 Composition and Inverse When you think of math there are several types of problems that are ment to help prepare for the different skills that you may have. I am going to solve three different problems that were assigned to me. Within he paper I will define what composition and inverse functions are. As stated in the reading , “the notation uses for composition is f composed with g of x or f of g of x” (Dugopolski, 2012). Something that is noticed is that the letters stay in he same order in each expression for the composition. These problems will be graphed and solved further in the paper. The following information was given so I can solve the following expressions. In step one I was given the following finctions: f(x) = 2x + 5, g(x) = x^2 – 3, and h(x) = 7 – x/ 3. To start I am going to compute (f-h) (4) f(4) = 2*4 + 5 = 13 h(4) = (7-4)/3 = 1 (f-h)(4) = f(4) -h(4) = 13 - 1 = 12 Answer: (f-h)(4) = 12 Evaluate the following: (f o g)(x) and (h o g)(x) (f o g)(x) = f(g(x)) = f(x^2-3) = 2(x^2-3)+5 = 2x^2 - 6 + 5 = 2x^2 - 1 (h o g)(x)=h(g(x)) = h(x^2-3) = (7-(x^2-3))/3 = (10-x^2)/3 Transform the g(x) function so that the graph is moved 6 units to the right and 7 units down. Function will be G(x) = (x-6)^2 - 10 Find the inverse function: f^-1(x) and h^-1(x) For finding f^-1(x), replace x by y and f(x) by x in f(x)=2x+5 x = 2y + 5 2y = x-5 y = (x-5)/2 Thus f^-1(x) =......

...Buying a Car. Andrew DeMasellis Composition I Amber Minor 01 JUL 2015 When I think of buying a car I think it is one of the largest purchases you can make besides buying a house, plane, or yacht. There are many things to consider when buying a car. First you should consider a budget to buy a car. Are you going to buy it outright, lease, or are you going to finance? Each one of these requires a commitment of your finances and you need to make the best descion. Along with just the purchase price remember that there is maintenance included in what you need to budget. How much will tires cost, oil changes, and brakes? These are all good things to keep in mind. Next would be type, American or Foreign. Do you have a preference based on beliefs or is it something that is not important to you. Another thing to take into consideration is your needs. Do you need a tuck, van, or car? Will one work better for you than the other or is it just about looks or affordability? If you have a spouse and 4 kids is it really smart to by a 2 passenger vehicle? Other things to consider would be brand, color, and model. When I look at buying a car I also take into account “what am I buying it for”. What is the purpose of buying a car and how am I going to utilize it? Many question shall arise when encountering the situation. The best course of action is to determine the why factor. Are you buying it for work or school, do you need it to haul trailers. These are......

Interest and influence: Having lived in this house for about 5 months, the creaking of my door every time I leave my room has become a sound that is part of my daily routine. After listening to all my recordings and selecting the top 8, this was one of the ones that, I believe, captured exactly what I was looking for. c. Techniques: Mic of the recorder was placed very close to the axis of rotation of the door d. Success in capturing sound: For a couple of tries, I could not capture the sound as loud as I intended to. After changing position, recording from inside the room and increasing the recording level, I was able to get the results I wanted. Background sound from my roommates was another difficulty but recording from inside the room helped solve the problem. 2. “Flush” e. Where and when: The flush of a toilet was recorded on Wednesday, 13th of January in my house located in South State Street. f. Interest and influence: Although this is a sound that everyone listens to every day, it does not receive the appreciation that it deserves due to its bad association. g. Led Composition

...Section 1: Claim: Observable factors that affect the composition of LEDs During our research of gallium arsenide phosphide (GaPxAs1-x), which is a semi-conducting material in the form of light emitting diodes, we observed how properties of the data collected directly correlated to the composition of the LED. The observed and measured properties we were able to notice and calculate during our research were wavelength, color, voltage, and temperature. Using a diffraction grating we first tested the different compositions for which color of light was emitted. Our data as can be seen in appendix 1, on pg. L93 table 1, shows that as the composition shifted from GaP0.40As0.60 to GaP1.00As0.00 the colors emitted, shifted from those associated with longer wavelengths to those of shorter wavelengths. (Red to green) We then set up a scanning spectrometer in order to measure the wavelengths, and as can be seen in our data in appendix 1, on pg. L94 table 2, as well as on the graph in appendix 2, we were able to measure the wavelength of each LED with varying composition. According to our data it can be said that greater bond length equals lower Eg, since lower Eg will result in longer wavelength. For example, GaP1.00As0.00 has the shortest wavelength and the shortest bond length, and as a result has the largest band gap energy. From the same data we can also conclude that greater bond strength equals greater Eg due to the fact that GaP1.00As0.00 has the highest bond strength. The......
