Inspirational approaches to leadership
Traditional approaches to leadership ignore the importance of the leader as a communicator.
Framing: a way of communicating to shape meaning.
Framing is a way for a leader to influence others.

Charismatic leadership
Charismatic leadership: a leadership theory which states that followers make attributions of heroic or extraordinary leadership abilities when they observe certain behaviours.
Charismatic leaders have vision, they are willing to take risks to achieve that vision, they are sensitive to follower needs and they exhibit behaviours that are out of ordinary.

Are charismatic leaders born or more?
Individuals are born with traits that make them charismatic. But most experts believe that individuals also can be trained to exhibit charismatic behaviours.

How charismatic leaders influence followers
Influencing others is a four-step process. It begins by the leader articulating an appealing vision. Vision: a long-term strategy of attaining a goal or goals. Once a vision and a vision-statement are established, the leader then communicates high performance expectations and expresses confidence that followers can attain them. Next, the leader conveys, through words and actions, a new set of values and, by his or her behaviour, sets an example for followers to imitate. Finally, the charismatic leader engages in emotion-inducing and often unconventional behaviour to demonstrate courage and convictions about the vision.

The dark side of charismatic leadership
Many charismatic leaders used their power to remake their companies in their own image. The separation between personal and organization’s interests were blurred. Charismatic leaders can surround themselves with yes-people, the result: leaders who used organizational resources for their personal benefit and executives…...

...Contemporary Issue in Business: * Demographic problem – Baby boomers are aging, and there are fewer younger people in Canada. Therefore, the demographic drag would probably increase in the coming years. As the boomer generation ages, labor force participation rates will decline and hours worked will fall. Aging will put pressure on the labour market. As workers retire and there are fewer people to replace them, there will be upward pressure on wages and adjustments on the composition and the nature of the labour force. For firms, attracting talent, while retaining relevant expertise and institutional knowledge, will be more challenging * Financial systemic risk: Until today we continue to see the enormous costs to the global economy of the financial crisis that started five years ago. Canada is not averse to this risk, since it gets transmitted across financial institution and markets. Although, this risk cannot be really controlled, managers do have the tendency to take on excessive risks during economic upswings, which leads to firms becoming overly risk averse during economic downturn. * More recently, Statistics Canada issued a report (March 9, 2010) arguing that by 2031, 25-28% of the Canadian population could be foreign born. These statistical forecasts are telling us that immigration is a major force shaping Canada’s urban areas. * Indeed, Canada’s track record in successfully integrating immigrants is slipping. On average, immigrants arrive in this......

...BUS 660 Contemporary Issues in Organizational Leadership Instructor: Katrina Esau UPS Case Study 1.) What are the major skills Jovitta Carranza has demonstrated in her career at UPS that have made her a successful leader? One of the things that I noticed right away is that Carranza was not afraid to take advantage of opportunity even if it meant moving across the country. She showed that that she was committed to UPS by moving multiple times to different parts of the country in a ten year period. Many people are not willing to relocate for a promotion let alone do it multiple times. She also was not afraid of stepping up into new roles and responsibility. She also was willing to move out of human resources into operations, which showed she was willing to work outside her comfort zone to accomplish the mission for the company. 2.) Consider the spiral of experience that Jovitta Carranza has traveled. How has her experience affected her ability as a leader? Carranza was able to see many different leadership styles as she moved across the nation in her different roles. By being in different parts of the country she was able to become more diverse. She was also able to pick apart other leaders by recognizing their mistakes and successes. By doing this she was able to learn and not make the same ones. She also surrounded herself with capable people who were all about UPS and getting things done. 3.) Take a look at characteristics of......

...March 17, 2007 Comm 201 Contemporary Issues Paper Women of Color and Reproductive Rights If it were up to me, I would describe a contemporary issue as a problem that has the potential to affect a vast majority of people throughout the same period of time. Being a young Black woman in the beginning stages of a new century and era, I have found that it is extremely important that I know everything that has to do with my health and my reproductive rights. As a little girl growing up, I can remember that I always had a fear of doctors; I always associated doctors with shots and needles. As I became older, my mother taught me that it was my responsibility to know all there was to know about my body and how make sure I stayed healthy. When I reached a certain age, my mother told me that it was time for me to make an appointment with a gynecologist and have my first pap smear. In the beginning, I was absolutely mortified at the thought of being invaded at such a personal level. When I explained my fears and apprehension to my mother, she explained that it was my responsibility to do any and everything in my power to make sure I was healthy, even if it meant being uncomfortable for a few minutes. She finally suggested that I do a little research to learn why I needed to go through such a procedure. When I learned of the benefits, I realized that I was gaining a sense of duty for myself in knowing the details of my reproductive health. I later realized that because I...

...financial position to survive in the commercial market and it is the entities themselves that are the beneficiaries from using their assets (Barton, 1999). Barton (1999, p. 31) concludes that heritage and community assets should be accounted for reported separately based on the view that the public generally are directly benefited from using these assets of the public sector which is contrary to the private sector. Barton (1999, p. 30) considers that the basic rationale of the two sectors is different and accounting concepts must be selected cautious that adapted to their own environments to achieve the useful, relevant, reliable and understandable information. For heritage and community assets held by the public sector entities, the issues that which the asset definition and recognition criteria are to apply and whether they should be included and valued in the balance sheets often trigger debates and arguments on the application of the accounting standards. Hence, no simple or straightforward standards can be applied evenly in all situations. All in all, how accounting concepts and reporting framework adopted by the public and private sector entities continues to be a universal subject. Many agencies and institutions have tried their best to get the optimum choice. This essay has discussed the sector – neutral approach adopted by the board, the arguments on the application of accounting concepts in public and private sectors and the considerable financial information......

Contemporary Leadership Issue: Remote Workers

...Contemporary Leadership Issue: Remote Workers   Abstract “The Integral or “all-quadrant” (AQ) approach provides a method to define a problem space which is at once elegant, infinitely adaptable, and panoramic”. This Integral Theory, created by Ken Wilber (2005), is independently powerful and useful as a means to explore and describe the human territory of experience ”(Susanne R. Cook-Greuter, Fall 2005, Vol 1, No.3, pg 2). While the C.Graves Theory concluded after research that there are eight levels of existence (value systems or Memes) which are: 1) Survival; 2) Security; 3) Energy & Power; 4) Order, 5) Success; 6) Community, 7) Synergy and 8) Holistic life system. Each value system includes and transcends from previous ones, thus forming a natural hierarchy (or holarchy) (Marcel van Marrewijk & Marco Werre, September 2002). Utilizing the concepts related to the integral theory, we analyzed the emerging concept of remote workers. Through our analysis, we identified the key perspectives of co-workers, leaders, and customers. These perspectives allowed our team to full explore the concept and dive deeper into how the key stakeholders view and interact with remote workers. Integral Theory (AQAL) Upper Left Quadrant: Intentions and Consciousness At a very high level, the intention for both remote and in office worker is to work together to meet a mutual goal. That sounds good, but can get difficult quickly if not applied appropriately. From the......

Contemporary Issues of Christianity Paper

...Contemporary Issues in Western Religions Harry Potter REL/134 November 20, 2011 UoP Instructor Contemporary Issues in Western Religions Religious beliefs have been the center of many conflicts across the entire world since the beginning of time. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism the major monotheist religious traditions have been at the heart of many of those religious conflicts. Historical connections and theological similarities are prevalent between the three. In parallel to the similarities exists the contemporary struggles affecting these western religious traditions. From the internal struggles within Christianity such as abortion, to its struggles with Islam and Muslim extremists, finally to the contempt against Christianity from actions of the Holocaust, each tradition faces contemporary struggles within their own right. Gaining a better understanding and insight into the historical, theological, and contemporary struggles between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism will enhance appreciation for each belief. Historical Connections and Theological Similarities: One main pillar of similar theology between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism is the belief in one god. However, each has different perspectives in relation to God. For example, Christians believe in [pic]the Trinity[pic] of [pic]God; God the Father, the Son (Jesus[pic] Christ), [pic]and the Holy Spirit[pic] ("Judaism, Islam, Christianity-Comparison", 2002-2011).
