Cultural Diversity: What Would I Do?

Not so long ago, in the United States, white men made up the vast majority of doctors, lawyers, professors, elected officials, and corporate executives. Today, corporations, institutions, work environments, and neighborhoods are multicultural communities. Communicating effectively in these global communities is extremely challenging, considering we must collaborate with other people in culturally diverse group environments. Culture is “a learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, and norms which affect the behaviors of a relatively large group of people” (Lustig & Koester, 2006, p. 25). Culture is also shared by everyone and by most members of any given social group. Older members of a group pass their culture on to the younger group members and it shapes behavior while structuring perceptions of the world (Adler & Gundersen, 2008). Diversity – a much broader concept – describes more than a person’s birth place, skin color, or ethnic heritage. In the most general of terms concerning group communication, diversity is simply the quality of being different. Most of the groups we are members of are made of individuals with different physical characteristics, traits, status, and attitudes. These characteristics include, but are limited to age, occupation, physical ability, marital status, personality, and religion (Engleberg & Wynn, 2010). Also, in terms of diversity, it exists within and among all cultures, but within a single culture certain behaviors are favored while others are repressed. The norm for a particular society is the most generally accepted values, attitudes, and behaviors (Adler & Gundersen, 2008). This paper will focus on what happens when these characteristics become a distraction within a group and potentially cause a delay in a project’s completion.

Since then, diversity within the nation has changed, evolved, and expanded into something truly unique and beyond stereotype. Diversity can be in a specific region or in the world as a whole. We live in a diverse society that has its challenges and advantages. I’ve learned a lot about diversity throughout this course. Diversity has a long history and is important in recognizing people’s customs, cultures, and religion even throughout history. There are many factors that are involved with diversity and some of them are race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age, and sexual orientation. ...Cultural diversity is divided into two: primary and secondary. Primary diversity includes factors such as age, race and physical abilities. Secondary dimensions include factors such as family status, first language and religion among others. In the work place there are three main categories that cultural diversity is classified into, organizational, external, and internal. Organizational dimension is the functional level. Granted, I have always had at least a tolerance towards other cultures and ethnicities that were different from my own, but this class has helped me to learn more about those cultures and taught me to have more of an acceptance for those cultures rather than just tolerating them. I have also learned that all cultures, races, and ethnicities should have the chance to be understood and accepted for who they are, rather than what the media portrays them as. So many people are discriminated against because of a story in the news that has absolutely nothing to do with them as a person, but just relates to someone else from the same group, and therefore those people are generally discriminated against as a whole. This class has really helped to open my eyes to the true level of diversity in the United States today, and how much we could learn from each other if we just took the time to stop and accept each other. In the essay “They’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught”, Susan Brady Konig shares her experience about Cultural Diversity Month at her daughter, Sarah’s, preschool. During Cultural Diversity Month, Miss Laura is teaching the little preschoolers about the differences in each one of their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The kids are being taught where their family came from, what race the kids are, and how it makes them all unique or different. Little preschoolers should probably have some type of knowledge of their background but not at two or three years old. One would agree with Susan Brady Konig that the idea of teaching multiculturalism in schools can cause cultural divides in this country. If it were to be taught in school, it should be taught later in life when students are able to comprehend and process the differences between ethnic cultures. The phrase cultural diversity can also refer to having different cultures respect each other's differences. Due to the sentiments it’s based on, culture is commonly passed on through generations, creating long–lasting bonds and traditions. Of those 300 million, approximately 98 million, or 33%, of them are a part of a minority group (Jarvis, 2008). This growing number can be attributed to the increase number of immigrants coming to the United States for the opportunity to have a better life for themselves and their families. It is predicted that by the year 2050 the statistic of 33% of people that belong to a minority group will rise to 50%. Of the current 33%, 14.4% of people are of Hispanic or Latin origin. This makes Hispanics and Latinos the largest minority group in the country. African Americans account for 12.8%, Asians for 4.3%, and other groups for 2.7% of the ethnic minority population (Potter & Perry, 2009). The data on the United States population verifies an important fact that must be implemented within the health care system: the statistics reflect the cultural diversity of potential clients. ...Culture Care Diversity and Universality Biography of Madeleine Leininger Madeleine Leininger’s theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality was developed in the 1960’s. The idea for this self-developed theory was constructed after Leininger recognized that nursing’s metaparadigm was missing two major components: care and culture (Leininger & McFarland, 2006). While working on a med-surg unit in the 1940’s, Leininger recognized many patients often reported that nursing care practices helped them get well, stay well, or adjust to another state of well-being ( Leininger & McFarland, 2006). In the 1950’s while working as a child psychiatric mental health nurse, Leininger realized the importance of culture in the care of children of different backgrounds (Leininger, 2001). From these experiences, Leininger reported thoughts of helplessness and culture shock due to her lack of knowledge of cultural factors that influenced nursing care. This led her to pursue doctorial studies in anthropology in the 1960’s. During this time, the theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality was developed.
