Economics provides a range of choices to decision makers regarding the outcomes or impacts of alternative courses of action. Describe the two types of economic analysis (see table on page 3). Come up with three questions of your own as examples for each type of analysis, which relates to your community.
a. The two types are positive and normative analysis. Positive analysis predicts the consequences of alternative action by asking “What is?” and What Will be?”
b. Positive
i. If two volunteer fire departments merge, which station and trucks will they use? ii. If minimum wage goes up, how many post office workers will be out of a job and how many post offices will close? iii. If the tax rate goes up, how many people will cut the amount that they are spending on goods?
c. Normative
i. Should the government step in and stop the merge? ii. Should the government change the minimum wage rate? iii. Should the government change tax rates?
B) Define in your own words and use examples to illustrate:
a. Opportunity cost
i. Define: cost of an alternative that must be omitted in order to follow a certain action. ii. Example: picking weather you should go and party (could fail test) or stay home and study (could pass test)
b. Ceteris paribus
i. Define: Latin meaning that one variable may affect other variable. ii. Example:
c. Marginal change
i. Define: small one-unit change in value ii. Example: studying for 1 extra hour with higher grade on test by 5 points
d. Scarcity
i. Define: resources people use to make merchandise that is restricted. ii. Example:
e. Production possibilities curve
i. Define: curve that shows the likely combinations of products that market can produce ii. Example: comparing tons of corn per year with tons of copper per year
f. Principle of diminishing returns
i. Define: when a company tries to manufacture additional output in…...

...Econ Homework Chapter 3:Problem 2 2. Consider an economy in which taxes, planned investment, government spending on goods and services, and net exports are autonomous, but consumption and planned investment change as the interest rate changes. You are given the following information concerning autonomous consumption, the marginal propensity to consume, planned investment, government purchases of goods and services, and net exports: Ca=1500-10r ,c=0.6 ,T=1800 Ip=2400-50r ,G=2000 ,NX=-200 a. compute the value marginal propensity to save is as follows: 1-C=1-0.6=0.4 b. Autonomous planned spending, Ap, equals Ca − cTa + Ip + G + NX = 1,500 − 10r −.6(1,800) + 2,400 − 50r + 2,000 − 200 = 4,620 − 60r. Therefore, at an interest rate equal to 3, autonomous planned spending equals 4,620 − 60(3) = 4,440. c. Since the marginal propensity to save equals 0.4 and the equilibrium level of income equals Ap /s, the equilibrium level of income equals 4,440/.4 = 11,100, given the interest rate equals 3. d. Since autonomous consumption changes by 4 percent of any change in household wealth and the decline in the housing market in 2006–09 and drop in the stock market of 2007-09 reduces household wealth by 3 trillion dollars, the decrease in autonomous consumption that results from the decline in household wealth equals .04(3) = 120 billion. e. Since the decrease in autonomous consumption that results from the decline in household wealth equals 120 billion, autonomous......

...1. The Berwyn Company is considering the addition of a new product to its product line. The firm has plenty of excess manufacturing capacity to produce the new product, and its total fixed cost would be unaffected if the new product were added to its line. Nonetheless, the firm’s accountants decide that a reasonable share of the firm’s present fixed costs should be allocated to the new product. Specifically, they decide that a $300,000 fixed charge (cost) will be absorbed by the new product. The variable cost per unit of making and selling the new product is $14, which is composed of the following: Direct labor $8.20 Direct materials $1.90 Other $3.90 Total $14.00 a. Should the Berwyn Company add the new product to its line if it can sell about 10,000 units at a price of $45? Explain. (5 points) b. Should it add the new product to its line if it can sell about 10,000 units at a price of $25? Explain. (5 points) c. Should it add the new product to its line if it can sell about 10,000 units at a price of $20? Explain. (5 points) d. What is the minimum price (that the firm can get for the new product) that will make it worthwhile to add the new to its line? (5 points) 2. In early 1995, there was a sharp increase in the price of newsprint, the paper used by newspapers. Since newsprint is the second-largest expense for American newspapers (after salaries), publishers were concerned about the price hike. Suppose that the demand for newsprint......

...Aggregate Demand and Supply Models Option 1: Economic Advisement Paper * Unemployment - Analysis and Recommendations A review of the current state of ‘unemployment’ shows that as of March 16, 2013, unemployment insurance initial claims are 336,000, with a current unemployment rate of 7.7% (dol.gov). Additionally, the consumer price index is up .7% (dol.gov). The most updated statistics for payroll employment shows that more than 236,000(p) as of February 2013, with average earnings up $.04 (dol.gov). For most employers, the average merit or annual pay increase will be about .04% or higher this year if the economy continues to show improvement. However, the rate of unemployment is still a great concern. The current rate of unemployment is reflective of ‘previously employed workers’ who have found themselves out of work. We must not lose sight of the number recent graduates and other working age Americans who are still unemployed. Additionally, current statistics reveal that the metropolitan cities with the highest gains in employment increases during the year were: * “New York-New Jersey area with (+153,000)” * “Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas (+118,200)” * “Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (+109,400)” * “Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, Calif. (+104,400)” (bls.gov) In contrast, the producer price index indicates that the GDP is up by .7% (dol.gov) in the United States which means that our economy is still showing signs of a......

(15 points) You know from data collected on the Widget Market that market demand and market supply have both increased recently. As manager of the facility, what decisions should you make regarding production levels and pricing for your Widget facility? Remember that supply and demand are about the market supply and market demand, which is bigger than your own company. You are being given data on supply and demand for the whole market and are being asked what effect that has on you as a small part of that market. (b.) (15 points) Now, suppose that following the supply and demand changes in (a), a substitute good goes up in price, and your costs of production increase. What new decisions will you make regarding production levels and pricing for your Widget facility? 2. ...ECON 2113 Homework 2 L4 Hu Weiwei 20268464 Xu Lili L4 Hu Weiwei 20268464 Xu Lili 1a. The demand curve is estimated as Qd = 1600-2400P and the supply curve for pay telephone service is Qs = 200+3200P. When equilibrium is reached, the quantity demanded is equal to the quantity supplied. Thus, we can solve 1600-2400P = 200+3200P to find out the equilibrium price. By calculation, the equilibrium price P = $0.25. Substitute P = $0.25 into the demand curve equation, Q = 1600-2400(0.25), the equilibrium quantity Q = 1000. Therefore, the equilibrium price is $0.25 and the equilibrium quantity is 1000 pay telephone calls per month. 1b. With the effective price ceiling at $0.10 on local pay phone service in long run, it is below the equilibrium. Since the quantity demanded is larger than the quantity supplied after the price ceiling is imposed, shortage is resulted. As the price is restricted at $0.1, though Qd = 1600-2400(0.1) = 1360, Qs = 200+3200(0.1) = 520 < Qd = 1360. The quantity supplied is not enough to satisfy the quantity demanded. It results in a shortage of 1360-520 = 840 pay telephone calls per month. Therefore, the maximum......

...Chapter 3:Problem 2 2. The marginal propensity to save equals: 1-C=1-0.6=0.4 b. Autonomous planned spending, Ap, equals Ca − cTa + Ip + G + NX = 1,500 − 10r −.6(1,800) + 2,400 − 50r + 2,000 − 200 = 4,620 − 60r. Therefore, at an interest rate equal to 3, autonomous planned spending equals 4,620 − 60(3) = 4,440. c.
