Women and members of the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) community have had many of the same struggles throughout history. Each group has had rights taken away, progresses in liberations for their individual groups, as well as setbacks for their groups. GLBT people have been noticed as their own group for a shorter amount of time than women groups have but are none the less important.
It is generally seen that the gay rights movement that we currently see was started up in the 1980’s because of the emergence of aides and it was an international conclusion that aides was a disease brought about by the homosexual community. The activists involved in defending the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities united to form a stronger front against the discrimination they faced.
Traditionally the more masculine men have been seen as a more rough, emotionally disconnected and aggressive image whereas femininity has been viewed more as timid, overly sensitive, submissive, and weak. Throughout history women have taken the necessary steps to fight this image and have become seen as more assertive, independent and ambitious. While conversely today it is more acceptable for men to be more emotionally in tune, more concerned with personal appearance, and more willing to be a partner to rather than in charge of their female counter parts. Of course, there are certain people who prefer to stick to the more traditional roles rather than accept these changes.
While equality in the work place has been an obstacle to both groups, strides have been taken especially in the recent years; however, women seem to be gaining ground faster than member of the GLBT community. People in the GLBT community face many obstacles as parents that women never had to experience. Women…...

...Week 2 DQ 1 How does Racial and Ethnic Groups define prejudice? Do you agree with this definition? Why or why not? Prejudice is describes in the text as “a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority” (Schaefer, 2012, pp. 35). The question asks how do racial and ethnic groups define prejudice, and although I could not find an exact answer to that question, I believe this would accurately describe how both of those groups would define the term prejudice. The description above does accurately describe the term for me. I agree with this definition because it deals with attitudes towards an entire category of people and involves attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs, not actions as stated on page 35 as well. I had never been exposed to any prejudice except from my Grandfather that had been through a war. I recognized his attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs as prejudice. It was how he grew up and it was obvious that those were passed on to him at an early age. I grew up in a very conservative part of the country and moved far away when I was in my early twenties. The part of the country I moved to had so much racial prejudice, I went into a bit of culture shock from others attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs. What I experienced was the exact definition in my first paragraph of the work prejudice. Week 2 DQ 2 Racial profiling is frequently in the news and is a prime example of stereotyping in action. How does racial profiling relate......

Eth/125 Week 7 Sex and Gender

...Week Seven: Sex and Gender Worksheet ETH/125 Week Seven: Sex and Gender Worksheet Answer the following questions in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use. What is gender? What is sex in biological terms? Are gender and sex the same thing? Explain why or why not? According to World Health Organization (2014), “‘Gender’ refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women” (para.3). Gender is in fact a social construct, designed to allow us to categorize and identify people by a group of emotional traits, behaviors, and stereotypes. These groups are often assumed to correspond with physical characteristics such as long or short hair, pectoral muscles or breasts, or penis or vagina. Biologically, sex is the possession of male and female reproductive organs, or more specifically, XX chromosomes for women and XY chromosomes for men. According to World Health Organization (2014), “Some examples of sex characteristics: women menstruate while men do not, men have testicles while women do not, women have developed breasts that are usually capable of lactating, while men have not, and men generally have more massive bones than women” (para.2). Clearly, once defined gender and sex are as different as men and women, black and white, and all the gray areas in between. A biologically physical male can exhibit feminine traits and identify with the feminine......

...Religion and Ethnic Diversity Denise McDonald ETH/125 July 12th, 2015 Ramona Taitano Loughran Religion and Ethnic Diversity Everyone in the world comes from different backgrounds, has different religions, and overall has different beliefs, morals, and views. I am white with a Roman Catholic religious background. I will be discussing the Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) religion as well as the Pacific Islander (Polynesian Descent) ethnic group. It will show the differences that these two groups face when compared to other religions and ethnic groups. According to Biola Magazine (1996-2015),” the overwhelming emphasis in the Mormon scriptures is on earning salvation through obedience to commandments and refraining from sin”. In most other religions you are born with original sin and in the Mormon religion, they do not believe that. Sin does not occur until a person is old enough to be held accountable around the age of seven and older. In the Catholic religion, we are taught that it is “The father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” whereas in the Mormon religion it is “The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost”. A majority of the Christian population believe that Mormons are not Christian while Mormons disregard that and state that they are. Non-Mormons still believe that Mormons still participate in Polygamy even though it has not occurred since the 1860’s. Many people believe that Mormons spend a lot of their time as teens walking door to door to try to recruit people to......

History of Women’s’ Rights, and The GLBT Community Jennifer Peluso ETH/125 Patricia Vail Women throughout history have been seen as a less superior gender to men. Throughout history women have been stripped of their rights to own property, vote, and many other things we take for granted today. Women have been oppressed for generations, until some bold women stood up and fought for their rights. Women have been seen as the keeper of the home and children. It has been believed in the past that a woman’s place was only to raise children, cooking, and cleaning. According to “Women in the workplace” the feminist movement began when middle class white women had to work outside of the home and experienced what discrimination was firsthand. The......

Week 7 Assignment Eth/125

...ETH/125 05/06/2012 Debra Bloom Appendix H Women have been looked at as the naturally weaker then the men. Domestic chores is what women were put to do as a job. Men were to keep to the heavy work such as hunting and plowing in labor. Women are taught to care for the children they beard, cook and clean for the household. In laws around the world women were allowed to make contracts, own land, and be sued by others if unmarried. A women who became married gave up everything to her husband, even her name. During the history the men effectively owned his wife and the children as material possessions. Two women, Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, who were temperance and antislavery advocates formed the National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) in New York in 1869. Another women, Lucy Stone, organized American Women Suffrage Association (AWSA) in Boston at the same time. As women start to become leaders in the professional world, they have also jobs once regarded as too physically strenuous. Women have become coal miners, fire fighters and police officers. As they advance professionally, so do their self image. In the professions there are more opportunities. There seems to be a "glass ceiling" a level which women do not rise. Women were, however, paid much less for such work than men, and their economic "value" decreased. It took many decades of determination for the legal reform to end the discrimination against women. Femininity is changing, girls are less......
