Sustainability Education

In early education, the mind of a young child is like clay; educators in early childhood can act as sculptors who can mould, shape and form the basis of their attitudes towards sustainability. Time spent in child care and kindergarten is the ideal time for children and their families to benefit from education about the environment and understanding sustainable practices. The EYLF, (2009) already incorporates the environmental and wellbeing outcomes into the framework, which is spread into the learning Outcomes 1 to 5. It further states that educators are to communicate to children how and why everything is interconnected (DEEWR, 2009). Through intentional and play based learning programs, children of any age can learn about correlations through biodiversity from the native plants, animals and people of the area. Young (2010) believes that through positive interactions, children are able to comprehend that they are a part of an instinctive system that is interconnected. This promotes a sense of wellbeing, personal identity and a respect for the environment (EYLF, 2009). Flannery, (2007) believes that regardless of age, even our youngest citizens should be taught about our ecosystems and the changing of the climate. Empowerment through education is for every generation, this includes even the youngest members of our community. There is a principal of best practice in relation to how settings facilitate this learning process that I will refer to in this paper as the HPS (Health Promoting Schools Model). If children’s needs were continuously met in regards to best practice of health education it would also connect children in some way to all of the key outcomes identified in Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).
