Eccentricity vs. Personality disorder

While researching strong female women in New York City history, I found myself drawn to the character of Mrs. Henrietta Howland Robinson (Hetty Green). The more I researched the life of Hetty the more questioned her mental health or lack of it. Why was it so hard for her to spend money? How had money become her the must imported thing in her life. What made her need to kept her fortune so close and what keep her from enjoying the basic comforts of life she could have easy afforded? Was Hetty Green just an eccentric old rich lady or could she have been suffering from a mental illness or a personality disorder?
Hetty Green was one of the first female financiers to handle her own fortune and investments in the 1800s. Hetty Green was known as “The richest woman in America” (Slack, 2004) as well as earning herself the nickname of “The Witch of Wall Street.” (Sparkes, Boyden.1936) The origin is on clear of the nick name of “Witch of Wall Street” One source stated that is it come from the book written in 1936 by Boyden Sparkes and Samuel Taylor Moore titled “The Witch of Wall Street, Hetty Green.” Here is a quote from authors
“When, however, Mrs. Green next appeared in New York she was wearing her mourning and for years thereafter she was never seen on the street except with a heavy swathing of black veil. It was this garment, perhaps, as much as anything that caused her to be spoken of as the Witch of Wall Street.” (Sparkes, Boyden.1936) The second source for the nickname came from the New York Social diary article http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/node/2460 titled “The Woman Who loved Money” that stated “The press called her “The Witch of Wall Street.” “The basis for the name was her irascibility and her personal hygiene. She stunk. In summertime the odor would be so foul that people working in the same bank office…...

... A. Attention Getter Why choose Non- Toxic Green Cleaning Products? Using Green Cleaning Methods and Products with environmentally- friendly ingredient is designed to preserve human health and environmental quality. Green cleaning techniques and products avoid the use of chemical reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals. (Wikipedia) Many of us are practically using cleaning products which contain too much amounts of toxins. Today, evidence shows that what we put in our home; and what we use to clean our home is just as important as what we put inside our bodies. In fact, the products that we use within our homes enter to our bodies through the air we breathe, through our skin, and through the water we drink. Our health and environment are much affected if we still continue using toxic products. Cleaning products are among the most hazardous substances we will find in our home. It’s almost impossible to be sure about the safety of store bought cleaning products because it is not required to have a pre- market safety testing by the manufacturer. The hazards of many products are only revealed after consumers have been affected or injured. To make things worse, manufacturers are not required to list the exact ingredients on label. So how can we be sure that the cleaning products we use in our home are safe? Quite simple, the answer is using green cleaning methods and products. Non-toxic green cleaning has become a priority in our homes......

Hetty Sorrel

..."CHARACTER OF HETTY SORREL" -:CONTENTS • c  The name “George Eliot” was the pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans. Eliot was born in 1819 at the estate of her father’s employer in Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire, England. Because of her father’s important role as the manager, Eliot was given permission to spend time in the estate’s library, where she expanded her knowledge by reading. As a young girl she was educated at the local school and then at boarding school. Eliot was deeply religious throughout her childhood and adolescence because of her pious family background and the influence of the evangelical Maria Lewes, one of her instructors at boarding school. When Eliot was seventeen, her mother died and Eliot came home to care for her father. In 1841, Eliot and her father moved to Coventry. While living in Coventry, Eliot met Charles and Caroline Bray, who led her to question her faith by introducing her to new religious and political ideas. Eliot’s personal life likely influenced Adam Bede in several ways. First, the portrayal of Methodists as a positive social force possibly stems from Eliot’s own rejection of some organized religions. While Methodism is an organized religion, Eliot was particularly drawn to the religion’s belief that salvation is possible for all people through personal effort. Second, the character of Dinah, who is strong and powerful beyond normal social conventions, is perhaps inspired by Eliot’s own willingness to step outside normal social......

...such as financial industries where sustainable financing and banking are the new catch-phrases. Delving into the green initiatives in Malaysia, we see the efforts and support that the government has put into realising the green concept in the country. Malaysia gazetted the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations, Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations and Environmental Quality (Control of Pollution from solid waste transfer stations and Landfill) in 2009. Further to this, Malaysia pledged to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40% by 2020. The seriousness of the Malaysian government’s intentions towards climate change and the need for energy security and green technology, ultimately led to the establishment of the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water on 9 April 2009. The National Green Technology Policy is defined by four main pillars – energy, minimising energy consumption; environment, conserving and minimising environmental impact; economy, enhancing economic development through technology and social, a need to improve the quality of life for all. The policy basically intends to utilise energy efficiently in bid to enhance the economy while increasing the nation’s capability for green technology innovation and educating the public on green technology. The government has put much effort in ensuring the creation of a green community in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth Malaysia plans. In the current Malaysia plan there is much......

Green Party

...Green Party Political parties are something I am not too familiar with. Aside from the most popular parties; the republican and democratic parties, I did not know there were other parties. Ignorant I know, but politics was something that I did not really understand. Through this assignment I was able to get to know a few other parties, Constitution, Green, and Libertarian parties. I decided to further investigate the Green party. The Green party is based on principals that are environmentally conscience. According to the Green Party of the United States (gp.org), there are ten key values that they abide by: grassroots democracy social justice and equal opportunity ecological wisdom, non-violence decentralization community-based economic justice feminism and gender equity respect for diversity personal and global responsibility future focus and sustainability The Green Party stands for the rights that every individual has and welcomes public participation in the government as a means of holding the government accountable. This form of government operates on the belief that everyone is equal and entitled to nondiscriminatory treatment and equality under the law. Greens believe in taking an ecological approach and it is imperative protect the environment. The Green Party way is to implement agricultural practices that will provide sustainability and protection for our resources. The Green Party does not support the use of violence. ...A meeting of minds in a lean, green world | Two years on, one company has used videoconferencing to reduce its emissions by 40,000kg of CO2 a year | | Videoconferencing can save customers money in ongoing overheads and travel costs, as well as slash carbon emissions in the drive for green IT, if the experience of public sector services provider Amey is any guide. Two years ago, Amey engaged BT as the reseller to phase in a videoconferencing set-up, delivered as a managed service. According to Keith Sexton, director of health, safety, environment and quality at Amey, videoconferencing so far saves the organisation. That is in an 11,000-employee company that manages vital infrastructure and public services at 200 locations around the UK, with 80 per cent of its carbon footprint caused by travel and transport activity. "We have an internal target to reduce our carbon. But if you look at the type of clients we bid for, about 80 per cent are government or quasigovernment organizations. These clients expressly ask us what we are doing about our carbon footprint and how we will fit in with the overall governmental savings," said Sexton. Increased savings While video conferencing is not the primary way for Amey to reduce carbon emissions, it has contributed significantly - mainly by enabling staff to have routine meetings over the airwaves rather than having to get in a car or plane and go there. "We did make the decision last year that we would try to reduce our......

...Stephanie Martinez Ms. Hawkins English 976 November 24, 2014 “You Must Vote” On September 21, 2012 Hank Green discusses in his Vlog “You Must Vote” how important it is as an American to vote. Green examines all the horrible reasons why people say that they don’t want to, or why they can’t vote. One example Green gives is “one single vote might not count towards who wins the election but every vote does count” (Green). What he is saying is to those of you who think that your one vote won’t change anything, but in fact it does. You need multiple people to make a difference and you can be one of those people. Green talks about how Americans have a voice in this country and voting is a way to get one of those voices heard. We have pretty good system when it comes to voting what we say goes we all have a say in what happens in this country. “Voting is our responsibility” (Green). Green basically is saying that voting is important so all those excuses you have are just excuses and you need to let your voice be heard. I defiantly agree with Green I have never voted and I realize now that my vote might not have a huge impact to what happens but it is still an impact. If only half of people voted in the United States then the other half of people wouldn’t matter. For example, if they voted gay marriage illegal then it will be because no one else is voting to help change it. If all Americans voted then everyone’s view and opinions would matter. After, watching this video I......

...Green There has been big talk about saving earth or going green, over the past few years. The main purpose is to preserve earth’s natural raw resources because we are running out of natural resources including gas, oil, and coal. There are energy efficient products being promoted such as battery operated cars, appliances, light bulbs and even homes. The problem is many energy efficient items are so expensive, that not everyone can afford to pay for an energy efficient car or an energy efficient home, but there are still many ways to help save the planet earth. Think about what is in that trash bag before you throw it away. Saving the trash could possibly mean saving the earth. If consumers could do something with the trash they discard the manufacturer would not have to use raw natural materials to make products. The average person generates four pounds of trash per day (Brown Par 2 ). If consumers could recycle some of that trash they could reduce landfills. Landfills are a place where your discarded trash goes; it is then buried. Not only are landfills not good for the environment, but they are not good for the wildlife. Another good reason for recycling is it saves energy because the big companies do not have to burn as much energy to produce something new. By using recycled materials it cuts down on the energy consumption as well as the cost for consumers. That means more money in everyone’s pocket. Consumers can also save a lot money recycling because instead of......
