1. I chose something I am interested in possibly someday going in to, the field of public relations; it’s not my first choice but wanted to find other information on something else besides what I currently do. I see public relations as essential to any organization, whether it is in the form of simple press releases to speeches; someone has got to do it. It was very easy to navigate through the O*Net site. I typed “Public Relations” into the search box, and within seconds, I could see that the Public Relations Managers, with median wages in 2010 of $43.12 hourly or $89,690 annually. When I went back to the list, the second career listed was “Public Relations Specialist,” with a pay rate of $24.98 hourly, or $51,960 annually As I scrolled through those wages pages, I could see that while the amount of expected vacancies for Public Relations Directors is “Average (7% to 13%),” the outlook for Public Relations Specialists is “Much faster than average (20% or higher)” The page even gave a link to its source—The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which gave alternate names for the position: “communications specialists and media specialists.” Among the reported titles that O*Net gave me, I think I’d like to be either a Public Relations Coordinator for a non-profit agency, helping get information out about programs that are available; or a Corporate Communications Specialist at a large, international company, informing the world about the company, its product or services, and helping to find creative ways to generate interest in the company and increase the size of the customer base in the process.

The Job Zone and Education pages were confusing, though. Both jobs require the same experience, skills, knowledge and abilities. However, I typically think of a ‘”Manager” as someone who has more knowledge than a Specialist might have (thus the almost $40,000 salary…...

...Human Resource Training Techniques Human Resource Management, Section E2C Introduction Training is an essential part of today's business world to ensure the ability and quality of workers entering or maintaining the work force. Proper training decreases the amount of turnovers, increases quality of a job done, and creates a standard of the environment that the work is to be done in, among other things. There are many different training techniques that can be used depending on the type of job, type of company, or type of employee. By having knowledgeable trainers and willing employees, proper training can boost employee morale and productivity by having the best possible understanding of their objectivity. Goals for training First and foremost, it is important for a Human Resource department to have clear and defined goals outlined, based on the company's mission, belief and target. Once this has been determined, a breakdown of job sets can be established. Within each job set, the necessary skills and tools will be defined in order to achieve specific tasks in order to function as an overall unit. When the goals are clearly conveyed to both new and current employees, it is important to develop an understanding of why these goals are important, how to maintain them, and the impact of the people working toward them. By having a concise set of goals outlined, the Human Resource team can effectively adhere to standards set......

Human Resources, Week 7

...Like all areas of Human Resources, Training and Development is very important. As Merry Tidwell suggested, training-needs analysis would be a great idea. Figuring who needs training is a great place to start because without good, well-trained employees, the company will suffer. In my current job, since I am new and moldable, I was asked to help retrain other employees with better work habits. Since I have been training my fellow employees, business has been doing better. As Kendall Gailbreath suggested, companies should offer a paid vacation each year. We are, in fact, the only first world country that doesn’t have the required 6 week vacation annually. Choosing their starting pay can be really tricky, but if it is weighed against how much time off is available, and then the employees would choose what they prefer: the pay or the time off. I think letting employees chose what benefits they receive at reasonable costs is a great way to keep your employees. My father-in-law used to work for a company that not only paid him handsomely, but also sent him and his colleagues on annual trips. They sent them to Reno every year to go to business conferences but also to go play. Of course, not everyone was able to go, only the ones that were stellar employees could go. Having the right training and the right incentive programs for employees are a couple of great ways to get employees to do the best they can for the company. Sometimes these can make or break a company. If employees......

...I interviewed a supervisor that works with the Leon County Clerk of Courts human resources, the interviewee was Jilda Hughes and she has been an employee as a Human Resources Manager for a little over fourteen years. Mrs. Hughes started as a Court Records Specialist and was promoted to the personnel division as a personnel technician and finally promoted to the position of a Personnel Manager. As speaking with Mrs. Hughes about human resources she shared some concerns and thoughts with me about her daily working environment. I first asked Mrs. Hughes what problems does her department encounter when there are restrictions placed on recruitment? The most comely encountered problem is applicants not telling the truth on their applications and resumes. Applicants list experiences such as having knowledge of different computer programs, and once the applicant is hired and given a task they have no knowledge of how to use the program. Employers have to be regularly aware of the types of information they are restricted from using in the selection process. In the past, organizations tried to determine if an applicant fits into the organization through their résumés. To ensure no ethical or legal boundaries are crossed the privacy of the job applicants are protected while helping the employer get a better perspective on the best candidates for the position.   I also asked Mrs. Hughes in what ways have budget cuts affected the selection process? Mrs. Hughes......

...MGT End of Chapter Questions – Week 3 Lauren Wilkes Mgmt 597 Chapter 22.10 In the case of Holly Hill Acres, Ltd. V Charter Bank of Gainsville, Holly Hill purchased land from Rogers and Blythe giving them a promissory note and purchase money mortgage. The note stated, “this note with interest is secured by a mortgage on real estate, of even date herewith, made by the maker hereof in favor of the said payee, and shall be constructed and enforced according to laws of the State of Florida” (HOLLY HILL ACRES, LTD., a Limited Partnership, Appellant, v. CHARTER BANK OF GAINESVILLE, a Banking Corporation, et al., Appellees., 1975). The promissory note was issued to Rogers and Blythe, Rogers and Blythe later took a loan from Charter Bank, in order to secure the loan, they transferred the promissory note they had created with Holly Hill. After Holly Hill defaulted, Charter Bank sued to recover on Holly Hill’s promissory note, the question being if the reference to the mortgage in the note makes it non-negotiable. First, it would have to be determined if Charter Bank was a holder in due course, they do fit the books description “a holder who takes a negotiable instrument for value, in good faith, and without notice that is defective or overdue” (Cheeseman, 2010). Which according the case the lower court did agree with. Although the court on appeal found the note was non-negotiable because it incorporated the terms of the purchase money mortgage. Now the bank was not a......

Human Resource Task 3

...Slide 2 Performance appraisal Effective performance reviews produce outcomes that benefit the staff and the organizations. According to Schneir (1982) performance appraisal includes the identification, measurement, and management of human performance in organizations. Performance appraisal is a set of procedures. Is a process that needs to be tailored to the operations of a business. A performance appraisal is good for employees’ growth which in turn contributes to the company’s success. Slide 3 The main purpose of performance appraisals is to help an employee improve their job performance. During the performance appraisal it is time to look objectively at how an employee is meeting the job’s expectations. Providing feedback to the employee of how well they are doing is the easiest part of performance appraisal. Letting the employee know that they are doing a great job is positive reinforcement which result in the employee continuing to perform at its best. In the contrary, informing an employee that he is not performing as expected is difficult, but necessary. According to Schneir (1982) appraisal should be more than a past-oriented activity that criticizes or praises workers for their performance in the preceding year. Rather, appraisal must take a future-oriented view of what workers can do to achieve their potential in the organization. This means that managers must provide workers with feedback and coach them to higher levels of performance. ......

Homework 3 Human Resource Management

...the whole traffic situation got him off guard. If he would have postponed his meetings he could have been more prepared and feel more relaxed before every single meetings. 2) How will your proposal solve the problems you have defined? My proposal about postponing the meetings would solve problems that will come your way when you are not focused enough. Since his morning started pretty stressful because of the traffic situation, that stressful feeling will most likely follow you during the day. When you feel stressful you are most likely to forget more things for example things you had to do or say during a meeting. Postponing his meetings would give him time to get everything together and feel comfortable going into the meetings. 3) How can you defend your solution from budgetary concerns? In what way is your approach both a solution to the problems of the expatriates at Tex-Mark and a good economic investment? The reason why my solution to postpone the meetings is a good solution because it can keep you away from any budgetary mistakes. I know that those meetings are very important because money is involved. The way I look at the solution for the expatriates is because I think that more time the expatriates get to prepare to go abroad the better they are going to do their work there. If they leave during their training or language courses they are not fully prepared to do good business for the company. If you send expatriates abroad that are fully prepared, they......

...MGMT 520 Legal, Political and Ethical Dimensions of Business Week 3 - Discussion 2 - Environmental Liability and Due Process In 1979, Paul and John Reardon purchased 16 acres of land located next to a manufacturing plant in Massachusetts. In 1983, a state environmental agency, responding to a citizen's report, tested soil samples from both properties and discovered extremely high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) on the plant site and on the Reardons' property where it bordered the site. Shortly thereafter, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cleaned up the contaminated areas. In 1985, the EPA notified the Reardons that they might be liable for clean-up costs. An EPA investigation of the property in 1987 revealed that some soil was still contaminated. This time, the Reardons cleaned up the property themselves. In March 1989, the EPA placed a lien for an unspecified amount on all of the Reardons' property to secure payment for any clean-up costs for which the Reardons might be liable. The EPA told the Reardons that they could settle the claims against them for $336,709 but noted that this amount did not limit the Reardon’s potential liability. The Reardons filed a motion for an injunction, arguing that filing a lien against their property without any prior notice or hearing violated their due process rights under the Fifth Amendment, which states that no person can be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Superfund (the......

Human Resources 587 - Assignment 3

...Running head: INNOVATIVE CHANGE AT FORD MOTOR COMPANY Innovative Change at Ford Motor Company Keller University Human Resources 587 August 24, 2014 Abstract Since Alan Mulally took over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Ford Motor Company the business has been transformed into a powerful competitive force in the global automotive industry. An examination of the company’s communications surrounding Mulally’s retirement and the appointment of Mark Fields as the new CEO demonstrate how Ford used positive and candid communications to overcome resistance to the change. Actions as simple as providing verbal and nonverbal cues have a powerful influence on how others perceive a change (Nekoranec & Fourrier, 2013). A proposed alternative communication plan, including the use of more communication channels with increased frequency, would have helped the company address some of the fear and uncertainty among stakeholders. An example of an internal memo is provided to show how the use of positive and supportive descriptions of the change can motivate stakeholders to act as change agents on behalf of an organization by embracing the change and recognizing their essential role in the process. Innovative Change at Ford Motor Company In the past few decades Ford Motor Company has experienced a series of disruptive changes pertaining to the company’s leadership. In 2006, the appointment of Alan Mulally as the company’s Chief Executive......
