...Family and Leisure I believe all of my leisurely activities are a result of my upbringing and the things that my parents partook in during my childhood. There are many different activities that I tried growing up like basketball, baseball, and horseback riding, but theses activities never really stuck with me. These were all activates that my mom got into, but not really my dad. I believe the lack of support from my father on these activities kept me from really getting involved with them as well. There is however activities that I picked up from my father that I still do today and are a part of my best memories. Growing up we would usually all eat dinner around the table then go and watch the nightly sitcoms on TV. Home Improvement and Dinosaurs are two that stick out the most in my mind. This was a time that we could all sit down and relax together. Then mom would usually read my brother and me a bedtime story and then we would pray before bed. I still use television as a way of reducing stress and relaxing at the end of the day. The pray before bed I believe helped to create a strong foundation of faith for me and my brother that goes beyond just going to church every Sunday. One of the things that we would always do when we visited my grandparents was play poker. Mom would usually give me and my brother around four dollars in change to play nickel and dime poker. This was a time that we all got to be together and talk about life while my brother and I got to learn...

Education for Leisure / Knife Crime

...Violent films, TV shows and err...poems?. Recently a poem was banned from the GCSE ‘Anthology’ book by the AQA is schools. ‘Education for leisure’ studied by 14-16 year old in England and Wales, written by the poet Carol Ann Duffy. The poem which talks about squashing flies and flushing goldfishes down the bog caused outrage by stating that it would cause fragile teenagers to go on killing sprees. A certain ‘Mrs.Schofield’ complained about the poem, stating that it was ‘Vulgar’ and resulted in the aforementioned ban. 400 years ago when Shakespeare wrote plays like ‘Macbeth’, you didn’t see ‘Ye Olde’ teachers complain and ban it. Is it really so different now? Shakespeare has been studied in schools for years now, which contains blood, gore, and knives and it probably isn’t going anytime soon. Knife crime is a very big problem in Britain at the moment, with over 277 stabbings per year, that’s nearly 5 per week. This shocking statistic just shows the state at which Britain is in. The main concern is that Teenagers may relate to the poem and carry out the deeds mentioned. Which may end up to something similar to the dreadful ‘Columbine Massacre’ in 1998? 2 years later, 8 year old Damilola Taylor was stabbed in the leg and bled to death. Many people say that this was the spark that started the fire in the media reporting knife crime. Young people in today’s culture are under pressure to have a ‘hard’ status- especially young male. In a recent survey, nearly half of teenagers......

This raised an interesting question. What do you do when you are free to do anything you like? Many people took up a hobby. A hobby is a regular activity that is done for pleasure, typically, during one's leisure time. Hobbies can include: collecting themed items and objects, engaging in creative and artistic pursuits, and playing sports, along with many more examples. By continually participating in a particular hobby, one can acquire substantial skill and knowledge in that area. Having a hobby helps to make you a more interesting person and gives you something fascinating to talk about with others. It can also help you to avoid feeling bored and often provides the opportunity to meet new people with similar interests. Learning something new is always good for keeping the mind active. This will also make you a more interesting person than a person who is addicted to Facebook, TV or doing other time wasting and unhealthy tasks. There are hundreds of hobbies a person can choose from. Some of them are: collecting, outdoor, sports, creative hobbies etc. Collecting is a practice with a very old cultural history. Discovering Leisure

...parachute successfully. When i landed, i felt it was such a pleasure to make it through something i had always doubt myself. The optimal arousal theory explains leisure behavior as a quest to attain an optimal level of arousal (Iso Ahola, 1980) But because i am afraid of speed and heights and has never been skydiving previously found the arousal level induced by jumping down the plane to be so hight that i now choose not to do it for at least a while. Before i had done the skydiving, i thought my body was not strong enough for this kind of activity. I was wrong. I have learned the strength of my body better than i thought it was. Also, skydiving benefited me mentally from choosing to do an activity that never cross my mind. Lastly, skydiving gave me an opportunity to meet incredible people, those instructors. They share with me that because they enjoy doing it so much, they do not feel as they working. This event could have turned out better if i were not badly scared of height. Another important factor is weather. I think if i do it again next, i would do it during spring or fall when the weather is cooler. Definitely, i will take pictures or record a video for memory later. Despite i enjoy this activity very much, i am not sure if i would make it as my future leisure activities. Even though i was excited and joyful, somehow i could not overcome the fear of height. However, i am glad that i did it. The second activity i......

Leisure Tourism

...food. Visiting strange places and meeting new people is an exciting experience. Every piece of land around the world abounds with picturesque landscapes and historical monuments, attracting tourists. Whether a gourmet or not, most of us love food. A chance to relish authentic dishes from local cuisines is definitely not to be missed. Unwind and rejuvenate Our body needs to slow down and unwind periodically to function in its optimal level. Employers insist on annual holidays for their employees to help them get rid of their lethargy and come back refreshed. The same is the case with school-going children. Moreover, holidays help bring families together and to understand and enjoy each other more. Travel has become the most popular leisure activity in the world. Every year, the number of tourists and tourism spends are rising steadily; in 2010, the international tourist arrivals almost touched a billion (a growth of 6.6%), while the spending is close to USD 100 billion (a growth of 4.7%). This is heartening, as these growth figures are in spite of the threats posed by health warnings and global recession....

Leisure Work

...Through our early stages of life, we are given roadmaps to success. In order to reach point B (figuratively), you must start at point A. Point A is typically school. There’s pre-school, elementary school, middle school, high school, college, graduate school, etc. Point A is where I currently reside. It is the point where you either fail or pass. My leisure history and most of my existence has been focused on achieving a better quality of life. That is life where I am educated and have a financially successful career. I view leisure as the ability to succeed in any career I chose as long as I put the dedication and sacrifice needed. I am goal oriented because I come from parents who work very hard in unskilled jobs. They have sacrificed most of their life to make sure I will not have to struggle financially. Ibarra 2 Coming from Mexico at a young age, most of my adolescent years were focused assimilating to the American education system. I have never made leisure a priority in my lifestyle. In fact, the small amount of leisure time i have has been focused on leisure work like Michael J. Leitner mentioned in the book Leisure enhancement. pp “Work that refers to activities that are engaged in freely and that are motivated by a combination of both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards” No one is forcing me to spend my time focusing on boring things like learning and reading but i chose to do so because in the long run i will achieve self-fulfillment and social......

Leisure Concepts

...Leisure Concepts Major Essay Assignment 3 Marcus Quinn Student ID: 110092672 Prepared for Dr. Duncan Murray Due date: 15/06/2012 11:45pm ‘Internet pornography can not be considered as leisure; discuss this statement.’ Today throughout the world, Internet pornography has grown into a major business and is constantly growing. Based on the theory of leisure, Internet pornography is accepted and considered as a form of activity, however associates of the Catholic Church are forever arguing against the Internet pornography business based on the fact that it is sinful and immoral. The main issue associated with Internet pornography is balancing individual pleasures and freedom against the various types of social harm that can eventuate. These views explore fascinating points and can be argued either way based upon personal opinion and belief. Research shows that participation in leisure has many benefits that can influence an individual’s psychological health, physical wellbeing, social health, economic health and spiritual health. Furthermore, all of these benefits contribute to the quality of life of an individual. Having a healthy spiritual life comes from living a healthy lifestyle and being emotionally stable. Being spiritually healthy may involve believing and following a specific religion to shape one’s morals. From a spiritual perspective, the Catholic Church condemns the pornography industry based on the grounds that it affects a person’s family...

Recreation and Leisure

...Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure. This is exactly what goes down at the Long Beach Outdoor Antique and Collectable Market at Veterans Stadium. I had the pleasure of visiting this event last week. Let me tell you, this experience was one for the books. Being a rookie towards the flea market/ swap meet experience I had no idea what to expect. Doing a little research, I stumbled upon a definition that gave me a little foundation of what I was getting myself into. By definition, flea markets are "regularly recurring event involving the participation of several vendors of used merchandise, collectibles, discounted new merchandise--but not exclusively new merchandise at list price" (Werner 1996). This event is a multicultural leisure context. It’s filled with people of all races, heritages and religions. They are either setting up a booth to make some sort of income, came to spend some money on an awesome toy, or just came to enjoy the scenery and absorb some this splendid environment. It has got everything from vintage clothing to furniture. There are vendors selling jewelry, boots, sunglasses, art, hats and more! From the Mexican vendors, to trendy young-adults trying to launch their brand, the trading post fell nothing short of diverse. Languages such as Spanish, Chinese and other Chinese dialects could be heard throughout the tents as vendors communicated with each other and any passersby of their post. There were booths upon tents upon people, and......

Classical Leisure

...Classical Leisure Classical leisure in ancient Greece was a health and knowledge based ideal that promoted virtuous choices and conduct, and in turn led to true happiness and fulfilment. This state of being, known to many as Aristotle’s ‘classical leisure ideal’, was not restricted by work or time and had no ulterior motives. The parallels in contemporary leisure pursuits that can be seen today include studying, poetry, music, games, travel and sport; and are crucial for the preservation of arts, culture and the history of leisure in the 21st century. The classical leisure ideal emerged in Greece in 400-500 BC, where Greek life was based on the city-state, and philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Epicurus and especially Aristotle expressed leisure (schole) as the main goal in life (telos) (Lynch and Veal, 2006). ‘This state of being was contemplative and felicitous, with activity both giving intrinsic pleasure and being undertaken for self-development’, and was completely separate from ‘free time’ - ‘...anybody can have free time. Not everybody can have leisure’ (de Grazia, 1962 as cited in Lynch and Veal 2006 p. 8). Conditions that need to be met for classical leisure to exist include an awareness of the concept, ‘a breakdown in the universal ‘work ethic’’ and an ‘absence of the clock’ (p. 8). Consumerism and narcissism hinder these features and thus prevent some modern societies from adopting a system based on classical leisure. The ideas of freedom and......
