The MOBILE MEDIA tours were an initiative of the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) to help build audiences in northern and regional communities of Ontario for independently produced, artist-driven film and video. In 2005, the tour took place over four weekends in April and went to four communities Peterborough, North Bay, Thunder Bay and Sudbury).

Each community had a 90-minute screening and a half-day workshop. A promotional poster and program guide, in both official languages, were made available free of charge by OAC to presenters and the public. The program guide included a critical essay contextualizing the MOBILE MEDIA tour within Ontario’s contemporary media arts practice.

The practical and comprehensive workshop following each screening was facilitated by a group of media artists, the tour coordinator (Annette Mangaard) and an OAC granting officer.

In 2006, the tour was expanded to 11 communities (Attawapiskat, Fort Albany, Guelph, Hamilton, Moose Factory, Moosonee, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Timmins, Whitefish Lake First Nation).

The screenings consisted of two 30-minute programs, curated through an open call to programmers, and one 30-minute program of work by local artists. The tour was co-presented by local individuals or organizations who provided the venue, screening equipment and volunteer labour and promoted the event to their community.

Once again, a promotional poster and program guide were provided by the OAC. Filmmakers, programmers, the tour coordinators (Annette Mangaard and Cheryl Rondeau) and an OAC granting officer participated in Q&A sessions with audiences following the screenings.

The tours have been successful in facilitating contacts between filmmakers and video-makers, programmers, production centres, distribution centres, galleries, universities, Aboriginal communities and audiences. In an effort to encourage…...

Teenagers just believe on using social media or texting each other they don't even believe on talking on the phone either. Social networks allow people to connect for a variety of reasons in a digital environment. The environment I am a part of is the Iphone. I wonder what did we do before they invented the iphone. The iphone keeps you in touch with a lot of different things like using your internet, checking your email , or keeping up with your status on Facebook. I do believe people post to much information on Facebook or Twitter. They allow people to know to much of there personal information on the internet like where they going or what they doing. People doesn't realize it's a lot of criminals and thieves out there waiting on people to post there personal information on social media. I believe social media gets a lot of people in trouble by talking to much on...

The Human Resource Department Use of Social Media

...The Human Resources Department Usage of Social Media Sites as a Recruitment/Selection Tool. In 1997 only about 11 percent of U.S employers were using the web for outside recruiting, figure that has reach 80 percent today and is expected to reach 100 percent in the next few years. Social media, sometimes called social networking, is nothing more than a technology that facilitates human interaction. Different than a website or a resume, which are strictly one-way forms of communication, social media sites allow users to comment, share, or chat with each other, often in real time. Social media has also become an important tool for job seekers due in part to the new ways people are finding out about and getting fired from jobs. As you may already know, most jobs come about through networking, not applying on job boards or aimlessly sending out resumes. Social media tools make networking much easier and much more powerful due to their interactive nature. Thus when a job seeker really learns to use social networking well, his chances for finding opportunities multiply exponentially. Nowadays, social media also plays a part in how hiring managers are conducting their research on candidates. More than 80 percent of recruiters use LinkedIn. Additionally, 50 percent of hiring managers can determine whether a particular candidate’s personality is a good fit for their company just by seeing that person’s social media presence. Recruiters can and will Google you... Regardless of......

Mobile Technology, Social Media and a 180 Million Peopled Market

...Mobile Technology, Social Media and a 180 million peopled Market Introduction “Information technology has for sometime been a wildcard in business, a source of opportunity and uncertainty, of advantage and risk” (Applegate, Austin, & McFarlan, 2007). Advanced economies of the world have in the past three decades taken advantage of Information Technology in all facets of life especially in the utilization of IT to drive efficiency in organizations as well as the linkages between the organization and its internal and external stakeholders. Though technology in advanced economies of the world has become embedded in the everyday life of people especially in the way they define strategy and how business is defined, not much can be said for the advancement of such new technologies in developing Nations due to so many reasons. The main reason for the hitherto poor penetration and utilization of IT in developing countries can be attributed to various factors including poverty, inadequate infrastructure, poor Internet penetration, high cost of energy, corruption and an unstable political system. However the trend seems to be changing since the mid 2000s. Economic index and a potential growth market Nigeria is an example of a developing economy that is embracing IT systems in organizations due to the rapidly growing trend of consumers utilizing the Internet. Internet usage has increased as a result of the increasing use of smart phones, which has in recent years become......

Communication through social media involves the use of an online platform or website (a social networking site) that enables people to communicate, usually for a social purpose, through a variety of services, most of which are web-based and offer opportunities for people to interact over the internet, e.g. via e-mail and ‘instant messaging’ (a form of real-time, direct text-based communication between two or more people using personal computers or other devices). Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0*, and that......

A technical reality, major parts of the information super highway are under construction all over the US (1994).” During the digital revolution of the last decade, modern humanity has experienced a shift in traditional media consumption habits, which is now culminating with mobile technology. In examining the emerging mobile landscape, two things are increasingly apparent. One, mobile technology is heading into uncharted territories. Two, this is happening at unprecedented rates. This landscape is so unpredictable that the introduction of a new......

Mobile Media Is the Future

...Jamie described the method of advertising through mobile media in her posting. She gave her opinion on the use of SMS ads stating her dislike for the concept. Jamie continued to explain how advertisements on free applications are tolerable due to their less invasiveness. She contributes the hassle of ignoring SMS ads as a reason for not liking the promotional strategy. I would agree with Jamie’s stance on SMS advertisements. I think they are annoying to receive and I do not trust responding to them. I feel that responding to these numbers may pose a liability to becoming signed up for a costly service unknowingly. Jamie continued her post in a discussion of the current smartphone market and listed that it comprises only about 11% of the mobile communication sector. She details the new methods of communication that have been established and become popular via smartphones. “Talk” has been downgraded and is not viewed as a primary function of a smartphone anymore. I believe that phones will continue to evolve to further function users with benefits and applications. I also think that in the next 5 years smartphones will have a more dominant market share by attracting a greater amount of users by offering more affordable products. After reading through Dr. Bentley’s research materials and Jamie’s posting I believe that the future of news and communication rests in the development and advancement of mobile media and smartphones. Talk and text will be replaced with......
