Abstract An electrical resistance tomography (ERT) system is used to measure the mixing of two miscible liquids. A data analysis method to monitor and measure the mixing process is proposed. On the basis of the reconstructed pixel conductivity data obtained from multi-plane ERT sensors, the mixing time can be measured and the best-correlated pairs of pixels are identified to determine the dispersion velocity of the secondary liquid in the primary liquid as well. Experimental results for the mixing of liquids in a stirred tank are presented. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

1. Introduction Mixing is a common process in many industrial applications, but due to its complexity theoretical approaches are very limited. Monitoring or measuring the mixing properly is of great importance from the practical point of view and for the validation of theoretical models as well. In this work, the electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique has been adopted to obtain the mixture distribution across the cross-section of the mixing vessel. The ERT has attracted many researchers' interests in the field of the process tomography because of its obvious advantages including non-intrusive measurement, high temporal resolution and non-radiological characteristics [1]. A mixing console is an electronic device that is used for combining, routing, changing the level, timbre and/or dynamics of audio signals. Depending on the type of mixer, a mixer can mix either analog or digital sounds. The altered signals are then summed together in order to produce the collective output signals. In 1958, the Willi Studer Company of Switzerland manufactured one of the earliest mixing consoles. This device, called the “Studer 69,” used reel-to-reel tape and was portable. While this particular console was portable, these early devices were still bulky. As technology advanced, mixing consoles became lighter and more compact, which allowed for the inclusion of more features and capabilities. (Coe, 2009) Research by Coe (2009) demonstrates that mixing consoles started out in the 1950s as purely analog, devices with only one or two channels. As more purposes for mixing consoles appeared, more options began to develop. Transformations in electronics supplied the digital technology needed for these new functions. ...1. Introduction The purpose of this lab is to introduce the students to the process, procedures and to determine important physical properties of mixing fresh concrete. With an understanding of concrete properties and the means of which to calculate these properties the students can demonstrate their knowledge in a laboratory environment. The students are expected to achieve this task by designing and mixing a batch of concrete based on specific requirements provided in the ASTM C231. The procedure requirements include strength, slump, air entrainment, volume, aggregate type and size. Students are split into groups and each group is assigned specific parameters to base their designs on. These designs and parameters are used to complete the concrete mixing procedures. The specific parameters for Thursdays Lab Group # 1 were a compressive strength of 8000 psi (55 MPA), limestone aggregate with a maximum size of ¾”. The mixture required moderate air entraining, a supplementary cementitious material called fly ash, and a target slump of 3”- 4”. This design should produce a mixture that is relatively high in strength, durability and workability. The assumption was made that the aggregate properties calculated we accurately described. A sample of this mixture design was created in the lab using the equipment provided. The mixture was then subjected to testing using the slump cone test.
