“Why Personality Matters in the Workplace” http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2011/03/07/personality-matters/ This article by FoxBusiness states the importance of understanding personalities in the workplace, first by understanding your own personality. Business is based on relationships so it is pertinent that individuals understand how they interact, but also be knowledgeable on how others interact. This knowledge will create successful teams and overall a successful business.
This articles uses OCEAN to talk about the Big Five in personalities. I thought this was an easy anagram to remember the personality traits for everyday knowledge. You can simply and daily refer to OCEAN as you interact with co-workers, employees, new business partners, etc. OCEAN stands for openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion/introversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism (emotional stability). Openness to experience refers to how an individual responds to new experiences and how flexible their thinking is. Conscientiousness refers to how you approach work and life and view the details. Extroverts like to interact with others, while introverts do well working in small groups or alone. Agreeableness looks at the level of friendliness versus hostility while interacting with others. Neuroticism talks about emotional stability; whether you show constant negative emotions or are generally more pleasant and resistant to stress. “Behavior vs. Personality: Behavior is what we observe in others as bystanders. We all learn about others and make attributions based on what we see. However, personality is not the only driver of behavior, there are always external forces operating to influence how we behave. ...Introduction Personality is defined as the consistent pattern of emotions, thoughts and behaviours that define a particular individual as well as the psychological mechanisms that bring about such aforementioned tendencies (McShane, Olekalns, & Travaglione, 2013). It also refers to individual reactions and interactions with others hence, it is an inner psychological feature as Hiriyappa (2012) describes. This predisposition explains behaviours and attitudes of employees hence a core determinant in organization behaviour as Kumar, Bakhshia and Rani (2009) explain. Personality results from an amalgamation of nature and nurture factors. In the latter, innate qualities such as brain and hereditary factors, determine personality forms. In the former, brain stimulation aspects that define personality occur through genetic transmission (Parikh & Gupta, 2010). In the latter, genetic and molecular structures found in chromosomes, determine individual personality. Nurturing factors that determine personality are sourced from personal experience, behaviour and empiricism. Physical factors regarding a person’s appearance define one’s personality when interacting with others (Jennifer & Gareth, 2008). The culture of societies determines its members’ personalities particularly on aspects of interaction, cooperation and coordination in relationships. Most of the individuals care very little about personality and the likes of improving it. They tend to take it as a factor that cannot be changed “that is how I am and I can’t change who I am”. Yet organizations would want us to behave in certain ways and employers value social desirable traits in their employees. Therefore, having the right blend of personality is critical for career as well as self-development. * My Jungian Type Personality (MBTI in Action) * The Pearson Hall Self-Assessment online (Pearson Edcation, Inc 2008) indicates that my personality to be an “ISFJ”. These types of individuals are labeled as the “Nurturers” who are loyal, amiable and willing to make sacrifices for others for the greater good. Some of the most famous people in the world such as “Mitt Romney”, “Mother Theresa”, “Bruce Lee”, and “Jimmy Carter” are cited as “ISFJ” personality types. But to first understand the personality traits we must talk about deep level diversity and surface level diversity. Deep level diversity is differences such as personality and attitudes that are communicated through verbal and nonverbal behaviors and are learned only through extended interaction with others. Surface level diversity is differences such as age, sex, race/ethnicity, and physical disabilities that are observable, typically unchangeable, and easy to measure. People often use the dimensions of surface-level diversity to form initial impressions about others. We spend the majority of our waking hours with the people that we work with and the different personalities within the workplace can make it enjoyable or unbearable. The articles that I will discuss in the essay focus on the types of personalities and the cultural fit of those personalities in the workplace.
