Macbeth - the Role of the Three Witches

...The witches in Macbeth reveal human weakness, heighten the tension, and foreshadow things to come, but they do not control Macbeth or anyone else in the play. The only power they have is their ability to reinforce an idea and to cause temptation that was already in his head. Hectate suggests that they do not have the power to make him do the evil and mischief that they desire him to do, nor do they need that power. Macbeth is fully capable of doing all the mischief and evil on his own without the witches. The witches control Macbeth by physical and/or emotional force. Fear and threats, rewards and praise work to control others. These ideas work to different degrees on different people. So much of what is called control depends on the person that is being controlled. For example, Macbeth was easy to control because he thought that the witches had foretold the future but in reality, they brought an idea to the attention of Macbeth. The promise of a throne may send some people to their knees while others will take to their heels. When the witches hold out their promises to Macbeth the only reason they can manipulate him is because they have a knowledge of his ambition and his need for power. In the end this was all they needed to know and to be sure of. They may try to manipulate, but they do not need to control. The character flaws that Macbeth has, will be enough to fill their needs. It is interesting to note that the witches do not ask for anything in return for their......

Macbeth Essay

...Weston Balskus Macbeth Thesis Paper 1-2-13 British Lit The Witches in ‘Macbeth’ “Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn and caldron bubble” (Act 4 Scene 1). These famous words, said by the three witches, come from one of William Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies- ‘Macbeth’ Completed in 1606, this play is set in Scotland, and dramatizes the corroding psychological and political effects produced when its protagonist, the Scottish lord Macbeth, chooses evil as the way to fulfill his ambition for power. Shakespeare wrote this play when attitudes were completely different to the attitudes of society today, in particular, widespread belief in witchcraft. In the play of 'Macbeth' the witches have an important effect on Macbeth, the characters, the plot, the theme and the audience. They help construct the play and without them it would have been a totally different story line. The three witches effect characters’ lives, orientate the plot, they are related to most of the themes or motifs and appeal the audience's attention. The witches, or three sisters, have a strong effect on the characters of the play- especially Macbeth. When Macbeth meets the witches for the first time, they greet him as the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is Thane of Glamis and does not know about Cawdor, he hasn’t heard that the Thane of Cawdor has died. “I know I am Thane of Glamis, But how of Cawdor? The Thane of Cawdor lives” (Act 1 Scene 3). When Macbeth learns that the thane of Cawdor has in fact......

The World of the Witches

...The Witches of Shakespeare's Macbeth are seen playing with the lives of others, therefore, the best place for their world to take place is a Potions and Fortune telling stand. The Witches find immense enjoyment in telling Macbeth and Banquo of what can become of their futures. It can be interpreted that the three speak to the men of what is to happen in full understanding that one of the will will go overboard with the knowledge and cause a horrific outcome. The Witches world takes place in a little booth covered with dark cloth over a low table with rugs to sit on. Outside the door flap would be people wandering around looking for something interesting to do now. Every now and then someone would pull back the dark but oddly inviting curtain and walk in. This is, to some extent, what Banquo and Macbeth had been doing, after all they had just finished fighting in a war and “wandered” into the Witches. Fortune tellers and potion masters, in the world of carnivals, are considered to be some of the more “curious” carnies. People always seem to be fascinated by them and either always want to see what will come of their lives so they can feel better or want to see what the “crazy old hags” have to say. With all the skeptics and the believers most professes deal with, the witches must have known that there was a possibility of something would be rolled out of proportion once the words have been spoken....

White Witches

...Combat is initiated when you encounter a creature. At the start of combat you choose which character or familiar you want to send out into battle. You will have free movement around the battlefield and you can choose which of the actions you want to take, be it Attack, Defend, or Spells. All HP is linked from the character to the familiar, so any damage incurred on Oliver will also be apparent with the familiar, and MP is shared in the same way. The main difference between a character and a familiar is that familiars have a stamina gauge so they can't be out on the battlefield forever. While not in battle though, the familiars will recover their stamina and can thus be resummoned to fight. In addition choosing your actions, you can also cancel them. Often times it is beneficial to Defend! to avoid damage but you don't need to stay in that position. Simply cancel and you are back to attacking, likewise if you are attacking and need to defend you can cancel the attack sequence and switch to defending. After progressing a little bit through the game you'll acquire a party and you can change their battle tactics. You will also be able to control the party loosely with the All-Out Attack or All-Out Defense. You can cancel your enemies attacks if you hit them enough while they are charging a Trick or if you time your attack to land just before their's does. This results in a Chance! during boss fights and is useful in producing glims. Green glims heal and......

...Blumberg opens up in her article “One town's strange journey from paranoia to pardon” that The Salem witch Trials were also known as the devils magic. Linder goes on to explain, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and apologized to the families of those convicted. Since then, the story of the trials has become synonymous with paranoia and injustice, and it continues to cheat the popular imagination for more than 300 years later. In Linder first paragraph she explains the background of how the thought of witches came up. Explaining that Several centuries ago, many practicing Christians, had a strong belief that the Devil could give certain people known as witches the power to harm others in return for their loyalty of the religion. A "witchcraft craze" was the term used that rippled through Europe from the 1300s to the end of the 1600s. Tens of thousands of supposed witches—mostly women—were executed. When it reached Salem the European craze was starting to wine down. In 1689, English rulers William and Mary started a war with France in the American colonies. Known as King William's War to colonists, it ravaged regions of upstate New York, Nova Scotia and Quebec, sending refugees into the county of Essex and, specifically, Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. This war aggravated the existing rivalry between families with ties to the wealth of the port of Salem and those who still depended on agriculture. Controversy also brewed over Reverend Samuel Parris...

The Witches

...responds that she “never did hurt them in my life I did never see these persons before I am as innocent as the child unborn.” To which Harthon responds, “is not your coate cut.” This is showing how much character analysis they put into the way women were dressed. Since John Harthon did not approve of the way that she presented herself during the deposition, he made sure to point it out in order to make it seem like Bishop lacked credibility. There weren’t that many platforms available to women to be able to speak their mind. When these women were accused of being witches, this showed that they could achieve a power that terrified and was widely unknown to the men in the village. I feel as though there was such a fear of female empowerment that the men tried to do everything in their power in order to shut down the women before it was too late. By having these trials set in place and deposing the accused witches, the men were actually opening up a platform for which the women were able to speak. These trials allowed women to testify and took those words very seriously, whether they are in accusation or defense. This gave women the opportunity to be heard, although it seems that most of the time, once they were accused, it was hard for others to believe them when they denied being involved in witchcraft. If when you were accused of being a witch and you denied it all instead of admitting to it, you were more likely to be punished in more severe ways. People who took the......

The Will of the Witches

...Danny Nguyen Professor Barloon English 1342 28 April 2013 The Will of the Witches In the play “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare, the element of sorcery play many roles such as dealing tragedy, and often stirring up the truth in the physical form of the witches. The three witches that Macbeth stumbles upon were man-like by appearance and offered very difficult discernment for both Macbeth and Banquo to tell whether they were woman or not. Like their appearance, their roles offered the same discernment. Although some critics offer that point that the witches have nothing to do with the play, it can be argued that the weird sisters in fact take control of the outcome of the fates of many. The setting of the play is like the netherworld setting, which is known by the rule of uncertainty. The only thing set in stone was evil, hence the weird sisters. With that being said, the role of the weird sisters was to create an uncertainty, to open up the doors to an unknown realm, and to cause the scattering of ideas. This is seen throughout the play such as when the witches plant a seed into Macbeth’s head to cause him to think, and to act differently, which ultimately causes the exposure of his true character. The first role that the witches play is made obvious when they deliberately acknowledge Macbeth as not only the Thane of Glamis, but also the Thane of Cawdor and all hailing King. This, most likely being the most important event in the poem due to its initiation of the......
