In a world that has become more and more globalized and multicultural, diversity is surly a big advantage for companies who want to play in the international market.
According to Susan E. Jackson, who conducted a study on diversity in the workplace, during the past years, nature of the workforce, has grown.
The interest of firms in “diversity” and multicultural environment is sensibly grown. Companies have focused their attention on programs that intended to promote diversity, to reduce stereotypes, to create good and healthy multicultural environments.
Examples of such programs include, non traditional work ( i.e. home work stations), training programs, employee benefits such as parental leave and dependent care assistance.
The interest in managing diversity successfully is widespread.
Anyway, despite recognition of the importance of diversity, many firms are just beginning to evaluate and adjust human resources management in the direction of multicultural environments.
Many issues have to be discussed and solved yet.
Many problems are still present when we talk about diversity in the workplace.


In the past women were generally hired on part- time positions or for low responsibility jobs because it was understood that their priority was taking care of their families and children.
Unmarried women left their position once they married. Married women instead, quit their job once they were pregnant.
Moreover, women were generally considered less capable than men and less oriented to high responsibility positions.
Today things are really changed. They are not seen anymore as inferior to men and a large number of them put their job first and family second.
Working is not longer seen as a “parking” waiting for a man to marry.
Organizations are gradually adapting them…...

This means jobs disappear faster and in larger quantities. Women in the public sector are also protected by unions, unlike the less-regulated private sector. However, when governments do eventually cut back, females suffer profoundly. Contractionary fiscal policy, often one pursued in recession, causes cuts in public education and public-sector service jobs. Any government spending designed to remobilize the economy is often directed towards stimulating investment, for instance in infrastructure, rather than injecting resources into public sector industries. Thus, the reemployment rates for men are more distinct, despite the initial debacle.

Inequality is also an influencing factor. While women have come a long way in reducing the disparity between the proportion of men and women in the labour force, and gaining higher representation in better-paid jobs, some employers may believe that male workers will clock longer hours or be less of a liability......

...Over the course of the past century in the United States, women and their presence workplace have been constantly shifting. There have been many changes, both economic and social, that have helped pave a new road for the life of a working woman. Based on the information that I have gathered, three key points of interest stand out. They are economic dependencies, the evolution of women’s employment and the “doing gender” theory. Each one of these factors has had their own impact in shaping the working woman of today, especially in comparison to those of fifty years ago. For this research paper I chose to interview two women that I felt were ideal candidates. They were my grandmother, Marion, and my best friend from high school, Leah. My grandmother, Marion Young, was born in the 1920’s and grew up as a child during the great depression. Marion told me that growing up during this time was hard, and it had a important impact on the way she lived her life. In the late 1940’s she got married to my grandfather, Vance. At that time they were both working full-time jobs. Marion had a high school diploma, which during that time period made it extremely easy for her to find a job. ...Working Mothers Many women today are facing choices that their mothers never had to face. One of these choices is whether or not to go back to work after having a child. The thought of going back to work was practically unheard of in the 1950's. However, in the 1990's it is not whether the mother will or will not go back to work, but rather a question of when. According to the Canadian Human Rights Commission Workplace harassment "involves any unwanted physical or verbal behaviour that offends or humiliates you...Serious one-time incidents can also sometimes be considered harassment." (Canadian Human Rights Commission, 2013) If left uncheck accusations of workplace harassment could potentially put a business in trouble with the regulatory agencies. In the workplace, employees experience sexual, gender, and racial/ethnic harassment. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has developed recommendations and guidelines as a way to reduce the occurrences of workplace harassment. On the other hand, employers also a responsibility to put in place “best practices” for employees to follow to ensure a safe work environment for everyone. Intervention is needed because persons who experience harassment have a hard time fight back. Because laws on workplace harassment are not sufficient to punish harassers. The act of workplace harassment/violence on the job is considered a legal and ethical issue.
