You have the tools—the parts of speech; correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization; and good grammar— to construct and use a variety of sentence types. You’ve studied the uses of modifiers, tone, and form, so you can reach the people you’re addressing. You’ve also learned to write to your audience, whether you’re sending out a basic business letter, convincing a group to accept your recommendations, or presenting a research report.
Now we’ll begin to put it all together. By learning how to express yourself in correct sentences and to recognize common errors, your basic communications skills will significantly improve. By learning to focus on your topic, organize your ideas, use transitions, and write an effective conclusion, you’ll write consistently stronger paragraphs, letters, essays, and reports. Paragraph Writing

...Jessica Gibson I think my essay could have been a lot better than what I did. My essay lacked sequential order. I feel like my sentences could have been a bit more complex also. I think my topics did address my thesis statement the correct way. My paragraphs did not have a strong closing to support my topic. My essay only had little coherence; It flowed in certain portions of the essay. I think the order of my essay could have been revised from less important to most important. I think I did have strong evidence to support my topic but I could’ve used more vivid language. I also think the essay did reflect the evidence and explained the importance. I didn’t use many transitions in the essay neither. I think I could have used more transitional words to help my essay flow better. My goal when rewriting my essay is to be as vivid as possible. I admit my rough draft had many errors but I will try my best to avoid those errors when writing my final draft. My final draft will have better sentence structure and more transitions to help my essay flow better. I will try my best to support my topics in each paragraph so my essay. My final draft should be fresh and interesting. I think I didn’t paste myself for my rough draft and was trying to get the essay done. I must learn to paste myself and take out time to get all my thoughts together to improve my essay. I will try to use some of the techniques from the class to have a successful essay....

Paragraph Writing

...Paragraph Writing When writing academically, purpose, audience, tone, and content greatly influence the writing to be delivered effectively. Purpose of a paragraph or writing is why the writer originally had written the writing. What ideas, stories, or information he has to share gives the writer purpose and reason for the writing. The purpose has an impact on the writing because it is the main cause for it to be written and without the purpose, there would be no need to write. Audience affects writing because you should try to develop a certain relationship with your audience and accommodate your writing to the audience’s needs. Knowing your audience’s background, demographics, and education can affect the information and content of the writing to make the audience relate to what is written. Audience affects the writing on how it is presented and put together to be more clearly understandable. Audience expectations and interests affect writing by keeping the writing interesting and relevant so you do not lose the audience’s attention. Tone affects writing because it serves as the writer’s attitude toward the written subject. Using tone can alert the audience to the attitude of the writing such as funny, sad, somber, and exciting. Using tone affects writing because the writer wants to bring the correct mood to the audience and to the subject written about. Content affects writing by keeping the audience attention with appropriate material. By having content appropriate......

Paragraph Writing

...I have a thorough writing process when doing an assignment for class. The very first step that I do, before starting any writing process, is to take notes on what I am writing about. I write down exactly what is expected of me, and any notes that I will need to understand what I am writing. This helps me to remember the information. Then, I lay out my notes in order all around me, so that I can see them if I need them. I am a free-writer, so my second step is to just start writing. At this step, I try not to think about any correction’s that I will need to make. The third step is going over my writing; making any corrections and revising that need to be done. Lastly, I write my final draft that will be turned in as my assignment for class. My writing process is very similar to the writing process outlined in my textbook. My textbook lists the writing process as: prewriting, planning, drafting, revising, and proofreading. (Pages 3 and 4 of Wordsmith) My prewriting is when I am taking notes for my assignment. When I lay out my notes in the order that I want to write my paragraphs, is when I am planning. My drafting process is when I just start writing. When I proofread my assignment that is when I am doing the revising and proofreading process. As you see, my writing process and the writing process outlined in my textbook are very similar. Paragraph Assignment 1 Writing with Intent

...English 47A 13 February 2014 Paragraph Assignment 1 Writing with Intent I can improve my writing in the next thirteen weeks by studying vocabulary, practicing reading, and proofreading my work. For example I have a subscription to the Union Tribune Newspaper. I try to read a newspaper article daily. As a result, I am able to keep up with the local news and learn new vocabulary. In fact the dictionary has become my best friend. Using the dictionary to look up words I don’t understand will help me understand the meaning and the flow of the story. I have added many new words to my vocabulary by doing this. Using the new words in my speech and writing, I am able to remember the vocabulary. Additionally to improve my writing, I have established a reading routine schedule. Early in the morning I read a book for thirty minutes. Secondly, I read a magazine or newspaper article in the late evening. My two favorite magazines are Times and National Geographic. They are very challenging magazines. However when I don’t understand the material, I will reread until I comprehend. Also reading a book or a magazine increases my knowledge and makes me smarter. Yet another reason my writing will get better is by proofreading my work. I will do this by using the tutorial service at the Academic Skills Center. Last week, when I walked in the Academic Skills Center for the first time, I was very impressed. And the best part, “it is free!” I plan to take all my English assignments that...

Com/155 Paragraph Writing

...My approach in writing an assignment for class is more of a textbook approach. In other words, what I learned about writing in class are the steps I take when writing for an assignment. The first step I take when writing for an assignment is by pre-writing. Pre-writing organizes my thoughts and helps in making the topic I am writing about more interesting. I start out with a draft of my thoughts and ideas on the topic that I am writing about for that particular assignment. With this step, I can put those ideas in an effective form and I am able to communicate my thoughts and ideas on the topic or subject matter in written form. From there, I take the revising step. I try to look at my work more critically in this step and I am revising different parts of what I have written in making the paper I am writing a well-written finished product. The last step for me is to edit my written work. I am able to look over what I have written, re-read, edit and I am also checking for spelling and grammar issues in what I have written thus far. In this editing step, I also enlist someone else to read and edit my finish written work. Having someone else to read what I have written and giving me feedback is the most important step in the process for me. By doing this step, I have an opinion and the critical eye of someone else other than myself, to give me a different perspective of my written work. Taking the above steps in writing helps me not only improving my written assignment but to......

Effective Paragraph

...Characteristics of an Effective Paragraph • Direction: a strong topic sentence that states the main idea and sets the course of the paragraph. It answers the question, “What is your point?” • Unity: makes one main point and sticks to that point throughout the paragraph • Coherence: ideas in the paragraph are logically connected and easy to follow ------------------------------------------------- • Development: main idea is well supported with details, facts, examples, reasons, etc. Unity Unity refers to the extent to which all of the ideas contained within a given paragraph "hang together" in a way that is easy for the reader to understand. When the writer changes to a new idea -- one which is not consistent with the topic sentence of the paragraph -- the writer should begin a new paragraph. Unity is important because it aids the reader in following along with the writer's ideas. The reader can expect that a given paragraph will deal only with one main topic; when a new paragraph begins, this signals that the writer is moving on to a new topic. Consider the following example. Note that there are two main ideas presented in this paragraph. The topic sentence indicates that the paragraph will deal with the subject of "employees' attitudes," but the paragraph shifts unexpectedly to the topic of "management's attitudes." To achieve unity in this paragraph, the writer should begin a new paragraph when the switch is made from employees to......

Paragraphs and Topic Sentence

...High interest rates create an unwillingness to spend money. Because consumers know that they will pay more over the course of the loan, they might choose to postpone buying high items such as cars and homes. Higher interest rates cause deflation, which means the purchasing power of the dollar is stronger. Debt deflation reduces personal wealth and aggravates an economic downturn. Many parties control interest rates, including banks and, the Federal Reserve. These institutions decide which interest rates to charge to other banks, companies in need of business loans and individuals wishing to buy a mortgage. The rate charged to consumers is not compatible: While borrowers with a high credit score receive lower interest rates, people with poor credit scores receive higher interest rates. Low interest rates affect purchasing habits as well. The Federal Reserve sets a low discount rate to inspire banks to issue more loans to each other and to consumers. When consumers and businesses have easier access to credit, they spend more money. In most cases, low mortgage rates equate to more home purchases and low credit card rates cause people to spend more on credit. However, low interest rates and an increase in the money supply means the dollar weakens. Businesses that rely on foreign vendors will see an increase in the cost of production because of the changes in the exchange rate. Changing the procure routine of banks and consumers through interest rates is a long standing......

It shows you how to punctuate each type correctly and how to combine different sentence types for effective written communication. Other useful guides: Using paragraphs, Using the comma. What is a complete sentence? Sentences provide us with the framework for the clear written expression of our ideas. The depth in which the depositions were done and the discovery process led to a successful win in the civil trial. The success of the civil suit in my opinion was mainly due to the adequate and proper research that was done, no stones were left unturned and, even though O.J was found not guilty in criminal court for the death of Ron Goldman and, Nicole Brown Simpson respectively he was held responsible for their deaths in civil court. Seeing the outcome of the civil trial against O.J, I knew that I would really enjoy being a paralegal and, to be able to work for some of the best lawyers here at Finnegan & Wicker Law Firm, makes becoming a paralegal worthwhile. Writing Paragraphs

...First paragraph. When it comes to writing a paper we should be very careful with mistakes, which we might have. While we writing our paper we might face many challenges. The first challenge which people might face writing a paper it is when there are too many words, which repeat a lot. People usually do not pay enough attention to that because they do not think it is a big deal usually. However we should pay attention to repeat words a lot, it might get our readers be confused and think that we do not know grammar rules at all. The second challenge, which people do face it is when they write too long or too short sentences. In other words, people do not keep sentence variety or rhythm of the paragraphs. When our writing does have sentences that too long or too short, it looks like we write long sentences because we do not know what we are trying to explain. The third challenge is not putting punctuation where it need to be. Without a punctuation the whole paper will look like it is not organized at all and does have a lot of information, which look like a mess.
